In this episode, David, Devindra, and Jeff discuss the presence of ads in streaming, and whether they'd take good video over good audio. Then, they continue their conversation about M. Night Shyamalan's Trap.

In regards to the Sennheiser Ambeo, I pre-ordered the original version, and while I was initially wowed, it started having problems after a year. The actual “Ambeo” setting started sounding muffled. I stuck with it for awhile because I’d spent so much on it, but was bummed something so expensive failed rather quickly The good news is they’re now offering a newer revised version of it that actually costs less, so hopefully they’ve worked out some of the kinks, but I might recommend getting a protection plan given my experience.

Yeah it's definitely not their normal fare, but it made 6x as much this weekend as Borderlands did. RedLetterMedia and others have already done full takedowns of Borderlands, so I guess now it's the Filmcast's turn. I wonder how many listeners here actually saw it though. Madame Web did double the opening weekend box office that Borderlands did. Would they get more downloads talking about the huge hit movie that's not normally in their wheelhouse or the huge bomb that is?

I was also thinking that although Ends With isn’t typical Filmcast material it might’ve been the better and more logical choice

There was a 3D animated Beowulf movie where Beowulf fights Grendel naked

Dave or Devendra, did either of you ever watch Ripley? Finally got around to it and it is incredible. Went back and listened to Jeff’s thoughts and both of you said you couldn’t wait to watch it and then we havnt heard either mention since.

Summer Movie Wager update: It's looking less likely that Deadpool and Wolverine is gonna pass Inside Out 2 this summer. Despite the huge opening weekend and the fact that it's still making huge money, it grossed less in its 2nd and 3rd weekends than IO2 did in its 2nd and 3rd weekends ( $96m & $54m in weekends 2&3 for D&W, against $101m & $57m for IO2). It's going to be tough to make up the $140m gap between those movies when D&W hasn't been outpacing IO2 since that first weekend. Also, It Ends With Us (which probably should have been the pod's feature review this week) looks like it's going to be in the top 10 after its monster opening. Just an early guess but it looks like it might supplant If as the #8 movie this summer, which would push Garfield out of the 10th spot, thus depriving Peter of the 3 points he got for putting it in his top 10. Nobody else had Garfield in their top 10, and IEWU wasn't listed by anyone, even as a dark horse, so that won't be a factor. Trap has been basically a flop (though not as bad as this week's featured review, Borderlands, which opened with less than even Madame Web did, ouch), so it won't be a factor. Alien Romulus is tracking for a $30m+ opening weekend, which means it's got a good chance of knocking The Fall Guy out of the top 10. Nobody had AR in their top 10, but everyone but Germain and Devindra had it as a dark horse, so that should be an extra point for everyone but those two. However, everyone except Peter had The Fall Guy in their top 10, so if AR pushes it out, that's 3 fewer points for everyone except Peter, who at this point is almost surely going to win the Summer Movie Wager. The final breakdown now looks likely to be this: 1. Inside Out 2 2. Deadpool & Wolverine 3. Despicable Me 4 4. Twisters 5. Bad Boys Ride or Die 6. Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes 7. A Quiet Place Day One 8. It Ends With Us 9. & 10. If / Alien Romulus Nobody had If or Alien Romulus as their 10th pick, so no extra points there for anyone. Dave had If at 9th, so he might get that dead on, but Peter is only one off then, having it at 8th, and that won't be enough to make up the large gap between Dave and Peter. TL;DR - Peter is going to win for the 3rd straight year

dunno how everyone is watching their amazon stuff, but, if you are using an app (well, the desktop windows "app" anyway - can't say about any others) and download the episodes to view offline, you are able to see them without the ads

Tidal has Dolby Atmos as well, on supported devices

Were you referring to “a little bit culty” podcast? That’s the one I listen to now, and its phenomenal

I hate ads and pay for the adfree option on every service I have. My wife falls into the category of liking FAST so she can use her phone, so can appreciate the range of options. Hell, I'd pay an equivalent to a streaming service to have a noads option on Tubi or Pluto.

Yes , books and museums are good options. I was thinking more 'if anything was possible, what would the future like look?' - especially for film, tv and even art - it feels like it's tied to an ad somehow. Libraries yes, but is there a way the industry (especially film and tv) can be sustainable to produce and consume and provide opportunities for new artists without relying on advertisements?

May Bouri

Books? Museums? When you buy movies online you also don’t get ads AFAIK

Mountain of Conflict

Jeff, I enjoyed listening to you express your new love of Dolby Atmos tracks on Apple Music. Here are some of my favorite tracks if you’d like to check them out: The Beatles: Sgt. Pepper Good Morning Good Morning Prince: When Doves Cry Rush: Tom Sawyer Marvin Gaye: What’s Going On Talking Heads: Burning Down the House Traffic: The Low Spark of High-Heeled Boys Billy Joel: The Longest Time The Rolling Stones: Sympathy for the Devil Elton John: Bennie and the Jets These are all amazing mixes, enjoy!

Is there a world where we can enjoy affordable art without needing ads? What would that world look like?

May Bouri

When my wife and I watch something with ads and someone goes to the bathroom during the ads, the other is ready to press pause as soon as the ads are over in case the other person isn't back yet.

Papool Chaudhari

TV was funded by advertising for decades so this is just a return to what worked after the “benefits” of streaming are proving to be largely unsustainable. I would not mind ads, but I really wish that they could be inserted in appropriate breaks in the show, rather than just stuck in the middle of a scene at a timestamp. I’ve tried watching a few movies on Tubi where the ad comes on in the middle of a line of dialogue! Make your streaming shows with built in breaks for ads, or put them when a scene ends in a movie, and it’ll be fine.

Cameron Stewart

Tubi is great for giallo films and older little gems
