Back from Cartoon Springboard, and off to Animation Sans Frontière!

I hope you've been well! It feels like just a couple of weeks since I last wrote an update, but I guess it's already been a whole month. A lot has happened since then, though.
Things got very busy in preparing for the upcoming pitch sessions, especially in the week right up to Cartoon Springboard. I also got the opportunity to test my pitch at the Viborg Animation Festival's Creative Media Industry Forum beforehand. It was just a small networking event for 6 Korean producers to meet 6 Danish producers, but I did get at least one new Korean contact that really liked the project.
After that, it was off to Valencia, Spain, to pitch Tales of Zale in front of a larger crowd, and it went... really well? I've put the audio file of the event into this post so you can have a listen for yourself. People were so very supportive of the project, much more than I could have ever expected, and a lot of people came up to me afterwards to share their business cards and opportunities. It seems that there may indeed be some options for making Tales of Zale as a TV series... but I don't want to count my chickens before they've hatched, so, for now, we see where the follow-up conversations lead.
Next up, I'm off to Stuttgart, Germany, for the first round of Animation Sans Frontière! That should serve as another great platform for networking and further development.
Oh- and I know things are very pitch-oriented right now, but I've almost finished another scene of rough animation for Tales of Zale Episode 3. It's one of the smaller scenes, so don't get your hopes too high up... But I just wanted to let you know that it's still being worked on!

2019-10-13 21:19:08 +0000 UTCIt took awhile for me to get a chance to sit down and fully watch/listen to this pitch and it's absolutely fantastic the strides you've made with your story. It's good the judges see potential for avenues beyond a TV series idea. This is a solid presentation and it's extremely impressive how well you've prepared for this pitch. "Bright future" is perfectly apt :)

2019-10-13 03:42:26 +0000 UTCMaybe as a continuation one day! Though one thing at a time, haha. I also have an easier time consuming series in these modern times. It lets you grow with the characters at a steady phase, bit by bit. A movie is a bit of a different beast, it has to be an experience all on it's own. So I think some stories definitely work better with that format than others!

2019-10-12 17:21:15 +0000 UTCYes, I agree that a series may be better than a movie. The show explores a lot of themes with many different characters and just wouldn't work as well in a film I think. Unless you write a big story for Zale or go for a Winnie the Pooh format, I'd go with a TV series too. Your target audience would find it easier to digest the stories and lessons in a short, 11 minute episode than they would in an hour-and-a-half movie. Personally I need a lot of of time and motivation to watch a movie and prefer something more bite-sized most of the time. That said, I'd still love a Tales of Zale movie if you have a larger, grander adventure for him later on!

2019-10-12 00:58:48 +0000 UTCThe adrenaline certainly helps. I'm not much of a talker normally, but on stage I actually feel more confident articulating myself than on a one-on-few basis. I do forget to breathe sometimes, but somehow it doesn't tend to show too much. But having practised the pitch a looooot beforehand also helped. Honestly I'd never given the feature film format much thought before this event. There seemed to be a lot of people afterwards as well that thought it'd do well as a feature too. But I think a lot of that also comes from the fact that there's a tendency in Europe to not do serialized stories, especially when it comes to animation. So when presented with a full story arc people may tend to think "movie" instead. Times are always changing though, and although a feature is an interesting prospect, a series leaves much more potential to dive into individual characters and themes, which I think may suit Tales of Zale better, at least initially.

And I have to say, after spending so much of your life working on something you're so passionate about, and then finally presenting it to many audiences and hearing such wonderful responses from industry professionals honestly makes me a little teary-eyed. You're well on your way. And you speak so confidently on stage too. Do you get nervous when speaking to large amounts of people about your projects? I can imagine the adrenaline you must get!
