I love the commentary on the future of entertainment too! Good ponderings. I feel like everyone's perspectives have become so skewed this year because of covid, that we forget how engaging and thrilling in person entertainment is because we haven't had it in so long. It makes sense given the cirumstances for them to think everything will eventually become digital, and that kids who grew up with YouTube won't know how to enjoy anything else. Buuut, I think it's a deeply rooted part of human nature to want to connect with other people and be a part of collective human experiences, like a stand up show or a concert/festival. And I think that piece of humanity will always persevere, because it's what makes us human. What makes us truly alive :').

I feel like Cody and Noel are getting so caught up in media trends that its affecting their judgement and removing them from recognising what most ordinary people, specifically their audience, actually care about. I simply do not believe that they are in competition with Tiktok and the type of media where mass quantity trumps quality, and if they are then they are being set up to fail because a YouTube video of longer form requires so much more work and attention than a one minute tiktok video. People gravitate toward different content for different reasons, and I think its a serious misjudgement to think that their viewers, or at least the viewers their content is aimed toward, are watching simply to put something in the background. Their content is not mindless, and they built their following based on videos that were both funny and provided insightful and important criticisms into certain aspects of popular culture that many normal people find problematic. Many of the people they have roasted are perfect representations of those problematic aspects of society: Girl Defined (religious fundamentalism), Jake Paul (fetishisation of wealth and influencing kids to devalue their eduaction), CreaTyler (boastful social media accounts that exaggerate how great other people's lives are), Dre Drexler (people disguise shameless self promotion as humility) etc. Your approach to social criticism in a way that is light-hearted and shows how ridiculous some people/attitudes are is what makes noel and cody interesting, not the quantity or frequency of their content.

As a Gen Z listener/supporter, I enjoy the conversations about the future of media y’all have. For full transparency, I’m 19 and I really like stand up and really enjoy seeing things in person. I really dig the aspect of enjoying art forms the way they were meant to be enjoyed so what I mean by that is I like collecting vinyl and watching stand up because they’re unique art forms that have whole worlds attached to them. Personally, I do feel the way you guys feel about the future of entertainment at times but at the same time I also feel like it’ll never cease to exist because no matter what there will always be a certain group of people who have an appreciation for a specific art form. If anything, I think in person entertainment will probably become niche? At least art forms like stand up.

I really do love hearing you guys talk about the future of media and what you think will happen next. This is about to be a whole fucking essay, I know it lol, but the thing about people not engaging with real life media I think will actually be the opposite of what Noel's predicting. Not to get super academic or whatever about media, but there was this huge wave of theory that came out after the creation of the mp3 regarding media and the artifactual "aura" specific to digital creation. Basically, it explains that regardless of how much society progresses, no matter how much we move virtual, there will always be a resurgence of the physical and analog alongside it because psychologically, we apply emotion and attachment to what we see, feel, and experience in reality. We can't do that solely digitally-- even through VR. Like even people listening to their favorite song on Spotify-- the reason that's their favorite song isn't because it can be accessed on Spotify, it's because they listened to it in their car and they remember the way it made them feel, or they were at a party and they heard it for the first time with friends drunk out of their mind. That's why there was a resurgence in vinyl and film cameras and these old styles of entertainment-- as things became more virtual, there became a lack of attachment and people can feel it. The physical feelings of the pieces (i.e. the records, photos) were easier to "assign" memories to. I think everyone's been cooped up for forever and that's encouraging more and more problem solving when it comes to how people can connect virtually and continue their lives-- how people can make more memories while they have no other options. But the moment people feel like it's safe to go outside? I think there's gonna be an explosion of people wanting to just experience things in person again-- like stand up, concerts, going to a movie theater. Of course, that's not to say there won't be a parallel movement of digital progression, but I really don't think the old mediums of entertainment will go away. They've stuck around for centuries for a reason, and it's because people, as cheesy as it sounds, really need other people. God okay that was a whole essay but again, seriously love when you guys talk about the future of media-- maybe I'm the only one, but I'm never just grinning and bearing it when you guys talk about shit like that

Honestly the dopest commentary I’ve seen on NFTs so far. My basic take on it is that it’s just the same concept of stock ownership where the investor bets on a company w/o promise towards what future profit might look like except now we’re expanding that idea towards art, creators, etc. It’s also comparable to the whole Ludwig sub-athon topic bc “investment” literally changed the outcome of his stream - there’s an obligation to investors otherwise you lose out based on public perception. The whole part about how investment would inspire “phased” creation was soooo interesting btw love how intelligent y’all’s content really is combined w/the diarrhea comedy lol

A majority of programming bootcamps now offer an option similar to what you had said with education Cody... you can essentially take the courses for free but you contractually pledge ~10-20% of your pre-tax earnings for 1 year or two years depending on the program. The last dev I hired right out of a bootcamp is currently in repayment for that kind of program and it's definitely cool but he's pretty broke in the short-term.
