My gf’s mom has worked at an animal hospital for a decade and there’s a story of one of the vets that was so depressed from putting pets down that she broke in one night and injected herself with the stuff they use to put the animals down and they walked in and found her dead the next morning. Now only one or two people have access to that stuff instead of the whole staff. Shits so bleak.

Yall gotta chill on vets. I can't speak to your particular one. Did you go to an emergency only clinic? Because the wait times at those are insurmountable during covid. Also ER hospitals have increased prices especially for people going there for a non life threatning reason. They have to deter people from using them as a normal everyday vet. Because that's where the wait times come from. If you have a normal vet and can schedule something that should help wait times. It really fucking hurts when you say shit like we don't care. We care alot I wouldn't risk getting bit daily to help a dog or cat thats hurt if I didn't care. Many animals are anxious at the vet and again can't speak for a specific practice but we will try to make life as easy on an animal as we can. Including fear free practices, medication and other techniques. Let me put this into perspective, this week my hospital saw roughly 12 dogs a day that had diarrhea. We are over booking due to covid proceedures so if your dog has diarrhea and isn't vomiting, having difficulty breathing, aka life threatening symptoms then we have to triage them. Because we need to make time for pets that are actively in crisis. Especially if you went to an ER hospital. We do all this daily because we do care. Even though id say 60% of the general public fucking hates us. The amount of hate we get at the front desk daily is the reason why suicide is the highest in our field. I know everyone thinks their pet is the most important. But we can't treat everyone that way. Diarrhea will never come first if that's the only symptom. If your animal is ever in a crisis you will happy we are making everyones dog wait so we can fight for your pets life. I have spent to many hours in surgeries fighting for patients to be told I don't care. Also no pet med is as complicated as human med. Its actually worse because I can't talk to an animal and I have to infer from whatever half assed history I get from a client, who can't even remember what food they are feeding whats going on with the animal. Sorry for the rant. Love what you guys do. But I also love what I do

Hi, Tiny Meat Gang fam. My name is Lauren Vaughan, I’m a veterinarian in West Hollywood and a big fan of Tiny Meat Gang. I was introduced to Cody and Noel about a year ago, and ever since I’ve listened to the podcast religiously, subscribed to the Patreon, and bought tickets to the live show (so sad it’s postponed :(… but of course necessary to keep everyone safe). In the past when they talked about their experiences with vets, it was hard to hear their perspectives because I know the other side of that coin so well. I tried to empathize because there is a lot that we in the veterinary profession often don’t communicate well and so there is a lot that clients don’t understand. But listening to last night’s bonus episode brought me to tears and kept me up at night. I understand that they were frustrated with their experiences, and it IS frustrating to wait for a really long time, spend a lot of money, and oftentimes not get answers or immediate resolution. But to hear that veterinarians “don’t give a fuck,” “don’t care,” and that our hospitals are “cash grabs” is so extraordinarily hurtful. I can’t speak for every veterinarian, but I will say with confidence that the large majority of us understand that we will spend over $150,000 in tuition to spend our lives in a career that does not pay nearly enough to ever get out of that debt. We understand that we will be working long hours with back to back appointments (on top of calls and walk-ins and drop-off appointments and everything else that isn’t actually fit into our schedule but has to be done) because we want so badly to help every animal in need, even though we know it’s not possible. And we know that day in and day out we will have to watch animals not get the treatment they need because it’s not financially feasible for their families. We don’t control the finances, but we do watch pets suffer and euthanize animals that could otherwise be saved because of the impossible financial burden on families. We think it’s expensive too. This is why we beg every family to have pet insurance. To Cody's point that “all dog issues are relatively the same,” this is belittling because it’s inaccurate. We work for four years to get an undergraduate degree, spend another four years in veterinary school, and oftentimes get further training in an internship or residency. Dogs and cats absolutely are "as complex" as humans (we like to think we're better somehow, but we’re all animals), and when we’re done school, we’re expected to treat more than one species. Most of our limitations are a product of finances. Your healthcare costs are tens of thousands of dollars, but you don’t know that because you have insurance and never see the full bill. We can’t run a CT scan or MRI at the drop of a hat, for example, because we have to get payment out of pocket for every single thing. Yes, there are a few common reasons dogs get diarrhea. A lot of people get diarrhea because they eat Taco Bell. That doesn’t mean that sometimes they get diarrhea because they have colon cancer or a rare autoimmune disease. I surely hope that neither Ollie or Chili ever experiences something unusual or difficult to treat, but if it happens you’ll quickly understand that not all dog problems are the same, and you’ll be grateful a veterinarian (maybe even a veterinary neurologist, cardiologist, internist, oncologist, behaviorist, ophthalmologist, dermatologist, etc., etc., etc.) is prepared to treat that unique case. Noel, it breaks my heart to hear that Ollie was so anxious when he was hospitalized. There is a huge movement in the veterinary profession to make our medicine fear free (Fear Free Pets). If your vet doesn't advocate for that (old habits are hard to break, it seems), please please please advocate for it on behalf of your pet. We are working hard to make that change systemic and give every pet an anxiety free experience. And yes, we are tired. It is hard to stay motivated and passionate sometimes. The profession has a scary number of suicides because of that very issue. I graduated just over a year ago, and the past year has been the hardest of my life. I've been in therapy for five years to keep myself mentally well while adjusting to the stressors of this profession. But we are not "so damn depressed" that we don't care about your animals. Hearing people talk about us publicly in the way that you just did is what makes us feel "bleak." At least, it's what made me feel bleak all night tonight. I don’t say all of this to get anyone cancelled. I say it because I’m hurt and I WANT to keep listening to Tiny Meat Gang. I don’t want to hear Cody and Noel’s voices from this point forward, only to hear these painful words in my head over and over again. Since my dad is a veterinarian I really agree with what you all said about the clinic system. The owners of the clinics put way too much stress and responsibility on the doctors and nurses there. My dad is always seen as the enemy to clients because they think that he doesn't care about the animals but just wants their money and after 20+ years it's really taken a toll on him. It's really a fucked up job because you rarely get credit for what you do and instead are hated especially when there's nothing you can do to save the pet. Really Sucks

As a vet tech of 11 years I gotta tell you, some places don’t give a fuck. Many in the veterinary field are jaded, just like anyone who works in human medicine. That being said your dog shouldn’t have been neglected like that.
