Hey, I see a Vet Tech and a Veterinary student above, as a veterinary surgeon it’s really sad to hear perceptions like these as it’s something we get a lot (I’m even in the U.K. and it’s the same here), we go to school for the same length as human doctors, and where they would specialise immediately after graduating we are expected to do everything from internal medicine to surgery to dentistry, seeing newborn to elderly patients, of any species presented to us. And believe me we do care, I often go home from a 15hr shift and need something like this podcast to distract me from thinking about all the pain and suffering I have witnessed in the day, I do whatever I can to help clients and their pets but in the U.K. certainly we are understaffed and underpaid (most of the fees you are charged go straight to corporates and drug companies). Today among veterinary professionals in the UK, Australia, United States and Canada suicide is up to 5 times the national average. It is double that of other high risk professionals such as our human medical counterparts. Just something worth thinking about the next time your wait is long or you feel like your problem had a simple answer (it’s simple because we have trained very hard to be able to pattern recognise in the way that we do). I’ll get off my soap box now, just really hope we can shift some of these perceptions especially in younger people to make it better for future generations of Vets. I hope Chilli is feeling better! #notonemorevet

I work as a veterinary technician so I can speak for most of us when I say we care a lot, there’s just a lot on our plate at the same time and it can be hard to manage sometimes . We are also understaffed a lot of the time in this field. Hope Chili is doing good though! Love you both and the pod!

I’m currently in school to become a veterinarian so it was interesting to hear you guys talk about it. Vets have huge burnout rates from low wages with huge student debt and constant emotionally draining work day after day. BUT we all do it because we want to help animals. Also I have to disagree on the complexity compared to human medicine as vets are expected to have vast knowledge on several species, as well as performing most things - such as surgery - themselves. Most “complex” conditions require extra testing that a lot of people refuse. Of course there’s zero reason you guys would know this so just thought I’d share! Love y’all hope chili feels better <3
