In terms of the 70s, it was a golden age of cinema and there wasn't a lack of experience in terms of acting technique. But it was definitely a period where people still didn't have access to filmmaking equipment on mass, therefore the low-budget/b-movies were often amateurish and cheesy in terms of acting and story as you say. I'd suggest Critters instead of this movie. Critters is bonkers but much more fun and effective!
