I feel ya, I was the same way but eventually got the hang of it. Let me help break it down to you. Let's say you made the above character. It was a design completely of your own and the character is unique. To everyone, including yourself, that character is YOURS. It is YOURS to decide lore on, their personality, and only you can authorize what gets done with them (art, association to other characters and worlds, ect.). An adoption puts all the rights I just talked about up for sale. The character is there, but you're putting their design and who they are up for bids so that someone else can take over that character (Adopt them). At that point, they become an adoptable. Whoever buys the adoptable can do whatever they want with the character. They can keep them the same, make small or big changes, associate them with new groups and lore, and get whatever art or content made for the character that the new owner desires. Heck, you can change the name if you want. Put no clothes on them, new hair design, the works. The person who bought the character is the new owner, they can decide what's up for that character once they buy it. TL;DR - An adoption is simply selling the rights to a character. After someone buys it, they can do whatever they want with them.
