In the same way that Doctor Who fans have their One True Doctor, and Trek fans have their Captain, I think a lot of us have our One True Holmes. For me it's always Jeremy Brett, no matter how wonderful other actors have been in the role. (And they certainly have been.) I've had the old Granada TV series running in the background while I pack, and today during The Adventure of the Empty House I realized that I also have a One True Watson, and I'm a bit surprised to find it's Martin Freeman from the BBC Sherlock series. I always did want Watson to punch Holmes in that episode, and the Sherlock writers apparently agreed. Poor Watson, he really does put up with so much.
My kids have, by the way, declared for the Miyazaki "Sherlock Hound" Holmes.
I'm running out of Holmes though, so I need to find some other costume drama series to keep me company. Phil has suggested Sharpe's Rifles, but I might put in Cadfael again since I've got it sitting around.
