It just doesn't look as good as having the monarch as the "Hero" and I suppose to simplify it you have to pick a side. They were both shitty.

(For anyone who doesn't know: Henry VIII was the king who effectively began the English Reformation, during which the Church Of England was formed because he was angry the Pope wouldn't grant him a divorce.)

I'm a lifelong atheist, but I've had some enjoyable evenings, surrounded by people, around a huge bonfire, fireworks, and pork pie and mushy peas. That said, I haven't been to one in about 20 years

But the truth is, what was the norm in Europe at the time, was that boths side of Christianity were trying to force themselves on the other side, and on non-theists. Queen Mary was just as cruel, on protestants. And both sides would burn "heretics" at the stake, etc. It was an awful time to be alive. Especially if you didn't fall in line with which ever doctrine was in control, at the time
