Strawbs: Hero and Heroine | Extended Play Lounge Ep. 95

I'm pleased to offer this special episode, as we're listening to Hero and Heroine, a classic album from Strawbs. Founding member Dave Cousins has recently passed, and this is the album that won the poll. This is a thought-provoking and aesthetically pleasing and varied listen. If you haven't heard from this band before, I hope you'll give them a try.

This is one of my Desert Island recordings. I fell in love with this album in the early / mid 70s as a sad bullied kid. It's timeless, it doesn't sound dated at all aside from it's an analog to tape recording which is sonically more pleasing to my ears.

So many great albums. And always so good live - in fact I booked them only a few years ago before Dave's earlier illness and they had to cancel. Prog, or folky prog, or proggy folk, but still a sound that's pretty much their own. One of the very, very many great bands that far too few people ever discover. There are so many more that need to be championed by those in a position to do so.

Major confession- this is my first listen to an entire Strawbs album. And I bought a used copy of this in the late-80's when I was working my way through the world of prog thanks to the 'Rolling Stone Record Guide'. And while I had been listening to Rick Wakeman since middle school (and Yes since HS senior year), I didn't get very far with this album. Stayed in my collection for decades, unplayed. I even knew "Round And Round" from the "Supernatural Fairy Tales" box set. And yet... So... wow. Just wow. Virtuosity without pretension. Just the right amounts of everything. And Cousins' voice! Oh, my! I'll definitely be revisiting this on my own.
