Allegri: Miserere Mei, Deus | Behind the Score, Ep. 65

In this episode, I'm diving into the myths and legends of one of the most beloved choral works in the repertoire. Allegri's Miserere Mei, Deus was written for performance specifically in the Sistine Chapel in the late 1630's. With the recent naming of a new pope, my thoughts were again on this piece...and I'm happy to share some history and analysis of this beautiful work. Enjoy.

Fascinating deep dive, and by coincidence, sparked a bunch of ideas for one of my projects - a set of village/tribe songs in an imagined post-electronic, back to singing around a campfire sort of future. Thanks for this sonic beauty and helpful dissection.

I've met Savannah, their new first soprano. She studied at BYU and will be an excellent replacement for Andrea (who has been one of the best in the world for decades).

Thanks for this. I had not heard the Tenebrae version before and it was interesting to follow along the voice leading and suspension resolutions on the score. Here in London, we are somewhat spoiled with high-class choral groups. And I agree with your comments on Voces8, who are my favourites. But you may not have read that Andrea is leaving them later in the year (after 17(?) years!). That will definitely change their sound.
