Venture capital has started buying up vet clinics that had previously had low profit margins because they genuinely cared for animals and only recommended what would be best for them - VC has gotten in and is trying to get people to pay for a lot more unnecessary treatments to make money. I used to house/dogsit a lot and the pure bred or designer dogs (esp the little ones bred for aesthetics!!) were just not as smart or as healthy as the mystery mixes 🐶

I will say I got her as a puppy when I was 21 which looking back was a horrible idea and I caution people all the time before they get dogs because they are SO much work, but ultimately so glad I got my pup, she’s been with me through college and a cross country move and it’s truly just me and her and our collective mental illnesses against the world <3

2024-07-17 23:55:14 +0000 UTChello i am a POPE (person of PUG experience) we got our first when i was 10, and our second when i was 21. of course as a child i did not understand the ethics of breeding, i just knew my mom was super obsessed with pugs. like….OBSESSED. she spent literal years researching reputable breeders and found one where she got both of our dogs, as well as my aunt and cousins purchasing from this same breeder over the years. is it possible to be a responsible breeder in an industry that is fundamentally unethical? i’m not sure. but with that being said, all of the pugs we got from this breeder have lived or are living quite long lives with little to no health issues. they are happy, friendly, loving dogs. my mom and aunt got puppies from the same litter, bella and oliver, who both lived to be 16 and 17 which is like…absolutely ancient for pugs and our current girl maggie is 9 and living her best life, though a little chubby. as a now 30 year old cat person who is extremely against breeding, i do have to begrudgingly recognize that some breeders are better than others, though the industry as a whole is wildly unethical

2024-07-17 20:02:44 +0000 UTCcommenting this as someone who grew up fostering dogs for rescue orgs : if you are ever considering buying a specific breed from a breeder PLEASE look into breed specific rescues first! these rescues work incredibly hard to pull dogs from shelters and have an actual sense of the dogs personality vs buying a puppy from a breeder you will have no idea what personality/energy needs that dog will have as an adult I unfortunately know lots of people who have spent thousands of dollars on breeder dogs that do not fit their lifestyles or they do not care to properly train, it’s a dangerous situation for the dogs, their owners, or anyone the dog may encounter in public

I fostered him because I tend to get bad summer depression and I knew that having a dog would help and let me say it did! having to go on 3 walks a day with him, coming home to someone so excited to see me and give me cuddles, taking care of a being outside of myself... all factors that seriously improved my mental health. So so happy he got adopted but I actually have been distraught from the grief of letting him go. Still highly recommend fostering animals as it helps them so much (not only does it help them regulate outside of the hectic/noisy shelter, but the adopter said that my foster notes helped him choose the dog!) but seriously beware of the emotional aftermath

People absolutely should not be getting attacked but how about we ban irresponsible dog owners from public spaces/parks lmao myself & my leashed Staffordshire Bull Terrier have been attacked by both an unleashed doodle & a German Shepherd on our walks, and he did not bite back either time. I get that certain dogs have stronger jaws but it all comes down to how you train and handle your dog

But for real, as a mother to a literal human toddler, I find peak pet culture baffling and infuriating. Every time I take my daughter to the neighborhood park, there’s at least one dog owner trying to let their dog run around off leash in a space intended for children. And then get all huffy and roll their eyes when kids show up. Dog parks are a thing!!! And miss me with that “he’s friendly!” as your deranged golden doodle bounds toward my 2 year old.
