It's very difficult to raise healthy lizards.

Lizards bodies' have extra, artificial organs. These aren't implanted-- they're born with them, and they grow as their bodies do. However, this puts a lot of stress on their young. These "extra" organs require exotic materials which aren't naturally present in the egg. Furthermore, they will siphon nutrients and other resources away from the rest of the lizard. Caring for eggs is difficult process, and requires a sterile laboritory environment.

Fertile eggs are rare to begin with. Once laid, they must be handled carefully. Hatchery workers must ensure the artificial organs get the materials they need without starving the rest of the lizard. Eggs are soaked in a nutrient solution to start. Once they reach a certain stage of development, their shell is stripped away, and the fetal lizard is placed an an amniotic bath. When ready to "hatch", young lizards are transfered to incubators, which they remain in for months. And long after leaving the baths and the incubators, children are quarantined and carefully monitored for infection or maldevelopment. The failure rate is staggeringly high, and every healthy child is prized.
