Nikki and Paulo's introduction and the whole concept of their characters was kinda botched by how abrupt and forced it was, and the fact that they weren't there back in S1, but the writers took these two characters everyone hated and rolled with it as best as they could at this point- gave us a fun filler episode which reveals all these random ways they'd almost stumbled into the main plot while they were background characters, all the while making them super unlikable and thus giving everyone who hated them the pleasure of watching them destroy themselves with their antics and then die. Much more fun than if they'd done an episode like this with someone likable, much less awkward and forced than if they had someone like this survive and become relevant to the plot so late in the game.
