Can't remember if it was this episode or an earlier one, but Diane has said that she doesn't like grand gestures, and everything that PB has done throughout the show has been a grand gesture. He's afraid that Diane will get bored of him like his exes so in order to "spice things up" he does all these big ridiculous things on a whim because he thinks Diane will be entertained and choose to stay with him. Remember his method to being happy is to just do a bunch of crazy meaningless stuff until you're dead. He doesn't think much about the consequences of his antics and takes every opportunity to go big. Case in point being the Belle-room, something that Diane had offhandedly mentioned as a childhood fantasy, which PB then jumped on thinking, "If I make her fantasy come true, she'll see how much I really love her and she'll want to stay with me." What he fails to realize is that Diane wasn't actually yearning for anything like that. It was just some silly kid dream that turned into fun wishful thinking as she got older. When she sees that he actually went through with it and had the room built, it's frustrating because he took something so small and turned it into a spectacle. And he's ALWAYS doing that. It's like if you max out your stats on your favorite car in a racing game, then the next day you find out your SO took your semi-old but perfectly fine car and turned into that exact car from the game "because you liked it so much". It's too much and unnecessary and you don't want it. I can't blame her for being mad that her husband is constantly getting into crazy shenanigans or unnecessarily trying to impress me with large-scale tokens of affection that I don't want.

I love Bojack but it's def not the best

I think that Diane’s breakdown was a long time coming. Honestly, PB has put her through hell this season with the campaign and the fracking and their house sinking. I think the Belle-room was just the thing that pushed her over the edge.

Peanutbutter is a good dude but he never listens and when he does he doesn’t understand what Diane needs or wants.

Right. She's been clear about what she can handle and can't handle. Mr. Peanutbutter is nice in a selfish kind of way. He doesn't seem always able to understand how people around him are feeling. He's that person who tells you just to smile when you're having a bad day. It's a nice gesture but its not always comforting or helpful. He doesn't seem to actually know her yet.

Bojack is an absolute ass at times but apparently we can deal with that. Reactions to him aren't as heated. Diane isn't compatible with Mr. Peanutbutter (who does not listen to her ever) and she gets the most extreme reactions consistently.

This is Bojack Horseman - it's never on a complete upswing. There are moments of levity and happiness, but as always we see things from Bojack's depressing, cynical viewpoint. And let's face it, we don't want it to be happy - we want it to be dark.

I think an important line is PB's "Do you know how hard it is to get 5000 fake books?". It's funny on the surface, but that's all the room and the gesture is. A beautiful thing with nothing actually in it. PB heard Diane's dream, but took it at face value as opposed to what it represented to young Diane.

Mr. Peanutbutter is very differnet from Diane - she doesn't like big gestures, whereas he is all about big gestures. She's an introvert, he's an extrovert. She tells him stuff over and over but he just doesn't listen. he thinks that just because he likes it, she will too. I mean, it was a nice gesture but her reaction is understandable.

I think it was Wisecrack, who analyzed the Peanutbutter/Diane thing here best: Mr. Peanutbutter lives through grand gestures, and Diane hates them. Back when he threw that party for her, he completely ignoed she never wanted one. And here she shared a childhood dream of hers...and he took it and made it into his gesture, knowing full well she doesn't like them. For Diane, she now lost something, that was completely hers, as the "Belle-Room" now belongs to her life with Mr. Peanutbutter. In short: Diane hates grand gestures as signs of love, and Mr. Peanutbutter knows nothing else. That's why they fell apart here.
