[Premium Access] Community - 2x21 Paradigms of Human Memory - Group Reaction

How meta is too meta? What a cleverly constructed episode. I'd like to think they got really creative with spare footage from past episodes. This intricate weaving of story lines really shows off the Russo Brothers beginnings and skill in storytelling. It makes me appreciate Infinity War that much more.

And IIRC, that $30,000 was for the rights to "Gravity" by Sara Bareilles, since he wanted to make a direct loving parody/tribute to a specific shipping video he saw early in season 1

Watching people fall in love with Community is like the most pure thing

Dan also paid like 10k out of his own pocket for the song

Easily one of the best episodes of the show. Glad you guys loved it. Marketa’s reactions are so adorable. Thrilled to see Pat back as well!

They hinted at Britta x Jeff and Abed discovering it back in the pen episode too. Britta said that Jeff usually wears a certain type of underwear, and Abed says "what does she mean, usually?". That was also the 2nd time the word "beetlejuice" was mentioned ;)

now might be a good time to point out that the Dean... is an Oscar winner.

Bottle episodes and clip shows are gimmicks most tv shows have do to save money and time, but are often criticized as being lazy and cheap. Community takes both of these formulas and, in true Community fashion, turns them on their heads. Just as Cooperative Calligraphy is a spin on the bottle episode format, this is poking fun at the clip show trope. However, unlike a traditional clip show which saves writing, time, and money, this episode required heaps more of all three as they had to diagram several different fake “episodes” that didn’t exist and film them all on different sets to make it look like they pulled clips from previously shot footage. All the clips were shot just for this episode. The fact that it looks like they came from unused or scrapped episodes is testament to the show’s brilliance. As previously mentioned, the Jeff/Annie and Pierce/Abed montages are referencing an actual Community fan video someone made. But, they are also actively poking fun at the fanmade “shipping” music videos that fans make on YouTube for dozens of tv shows. Right down to the choice of music, and the editing style to inject false romance and chemistry between characters who would otherwise have none, just to support their “ship.”

Six Seasons and a Movie! The Annie/Jeff Pierce/Abed montage was made because of this fan made montage https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=SsBvqDwVqwc

One of my favorite community episodes, absolutely love this episode, I feel like it gives that much more depth to the group, it show us that the stories and adventures we get to witness are but a tiny portion of all the things that the group experience. Marketa is right, in the scene where the group is in straight jackets Jeff preface his crazy rant by saying that they are in this state because of Mercury poisoning. My favorite scene is when Abed is cosplaying “The Cape” in the cafeteria and he spill Jeff’s lunch all over the floor, I was in stitches the first time I saw this scene. Apparently this was one of the hardest episode to pull together, the cast spent days running from studios to studios to film all these clips, the result was more than worth it. It was a strenuous road but in the end we did get our Six Seasons, still waiting on that movie though!

Abed's references to The Cape tv series are my favorite because that show was cancelled almost immediately, and yet I still remember watching it when it was on.

That Jeff/Annie clip wasn't just funny, it was actually Dan Harmon's response to fans who were upset with what Community became in Season 2. A number of fans (along with NBC executives) were rather unhappy that Dan Harmon decided to change Community from a conventional single-camera sitcom into something more over-the-top. One of the biggest complaints was the anticlimactic way the Jeff/Annie/Britta love triangle resolved. So for Dan Harmon to then to poke fun and dismiss Jeff and Annie's "will they, won't they" dynamic and then reveal Jeff and Britta have been banging all season with no romantic overtones...it was his massive middle finger to those who wanted Community to be more conventional.. We'll see a more pointed statement to begin Season 3, so look for that.

Community was always fighting for that next season. Harmon kept going over budget, he had to spend $30,000 of his own money to fund this episode. That's why you get "Six Seasons and a Movie." in this episode. Also watch The Cape, its a show referenced throughout this episode.

Raymond Strand

the Annie and Jeff tribute was actually a re-creation of a really old fan made Community tribute video that was made after season 1 that took a bunch of clips of Annie and Jeff and mixed them to the same Music, Dan Harmon actually contacted the creator of the video and got her permission to re-create it.

Six seasons and a movie!

ToySouljah

One of the best episodes. A fake clip clip show. So clever, so funny... I think this is the episode where it became my favorite comedy.

Bisibia

All of the clips for this episode were written for this episode. The Halloween set had to be recreated for this episode, but they filmed the claymation clip during the Christmas episode.

Legion

If it edits the video in multiple 2-3 second segments it will give viewers seizures #themoreyouknow

About the origins of the clip show with the sad music (Jeff and Annie, etc) - check fan video "Gravity (Jeff/Annie)" on Youtube :)
