Today we get introduce to Faye Valentine. I personally have seen many cosplays and I also feel a lot of characters in current movies and shows have been based off of her likeness. 2018-06-16 01:08:21 +0000 UTCThis is true. Although I remember Toonami airing the episodes when I was around 9-10 (circa 2000) and IMDB lists DBZ as running from '96-'03, which I assume must be the dub since as you pointed out DBZ was earlier than that (started in '89 I think)

But what actually kicked off anime fandom in the U.S. was the movie Akira in the late 80s. There were anime fans before that, of course, but that was when anime cons and anime BBSes started to become more and more common. Then DBZ and Sailor Moon, around the same time in the early/mid 90s, were the first anime to be widespread on American TV.

So long as there were cool looking ships involved, Watanabe was given carte blanche as to the content of the show. Thusly, Cowboy Bebop came to be.
