[Early Access] Agents of Shield - Turn, Turn, Turn - Group Reaction!!

IT'S HERE! I will let the reaction speak for itself. Thanks for all your support and enjoy the review!

I'm not sure if this was planned from the beginning or just sort of improv'd on the spot after the writers were clued into the plot of Winter Soldier. Either way, I feel what this reveal really does is make those first 16 episodes completely necessary. The procedural nature of those early eps were there to allow us to get to know the characters, and to feel this betrayal at the end. This sort of gave me that old feeling from watching 24 (spoiler, there's a mole every damn season) but it was still very cool to see Ward revealed as Hydra!

I agree. Her reaction felt contrived. Even when they tried to throw us for a loop and make us think May was the double agent, she was SO sure she wasn't. Definitely felt like she's seen these episodes before.

Elisa Ingo

Its kind of a bummer you had to hear through the entire episode that she (not sure what the reactors name is sorry) thought grant was bad because your reactions were so anticlimactic compared to how most people reacted when that scene happened no offense. Anyways, at least you seem to be enjoying the show more.

Agreed.

Nudeldifudel

Yeah maybe Rana has seen more before then she realized. And do you know how much nahif has watched?

Nudeldifudel

I feel like the show did a pretty good job hiding Grant's double nature up to this point, yet Rana (whom we all love but isn't normally correct in her assumptions with shows) seemed to know right-off-the-bat that he was Hydra. I know Nahid watched this show before, so I'm curious whether she already knew he was bad and was trying to get the others to the same realization a little early. She mentions it like four times, and at odd moments, so by the end, no one seemed remotely surprised when Grant shot the agents (which is not how anyone else I know reacted). Just curious, but a great reaction again everyone.

This was indeed planned from the beginning, because everything leading up to this was seeded in those early episodes, in fact, the show even explains away the complaint of why this team was made up of these certain characters. The writers knew always what was coming and what they couldn't do, so for 16 episodes they had to basically tread water until they could link up with the Winter Soldier and for the impact to be felt. Because NOBODY saw it coming. Those early episodes are incredibly pivotal not only to set up for this turn, but it is also important for what comes down the line even in season 5. Also, this episode is technically set somewhat concurrently with the Winter Soldier. And why did it have to take so long? Because again, they had to wait until the MCU dropped the HYDRA reveal, the show could not truly take off until this moment and they were not allowed to reveal hints earlier. This show's first season had to wait for the film side of MCU, they had their orders to follow basically and it was to wait. No one knew except the showrunners and writers. The actors didn't know until after they were given a screening of Winter Soldier. Also, as you continue to watch the show, it also links at times with some of the movies that are released in the last few years around whenever those episodes first aired on TV, I would suggest taking a look at Geekritique's MCU Timeline video to see which MCU movie falls in with Agents of SHIELD episodes, they give a good rundown of how to watch the MCU movies in conjunction with the show. There is at least a link to Avengers: Age of Ultron that will come up and you should watch that movie in conjunction with the episodes, much like you did with The Winter Soldier. This is a show that went from facing its first season being handcuffed by the MCU films and what went on with the big twist in Winter Soldier, to finding their own voice and creating their own mythology to no longer be held up by the MCU films but instead stand on its own and telling its own stories. To be quite frank, it's a shame that the MCU films do not crossover with the show more or that the films actually accept and validate this show and what it has done to broaden the MCU as a whole. This is the MCU's hidden gem that to be honest, even beats the movies in narrative storytelling. What this show has been able to do to not just operate within the confines of the MCU rules but also to tell amazing stories with great character development, while also have to carry parts of the MCU and link up with it (which no other MCU TV show has had to do), yet they still make it all work. Agents of SHIELD does not get thanked enough for the leg work it does for the MCU, it is highly underrated and deserves better. I am at least glad in the recent years, those critics who once criticized the show has come around to realizing that this show is the best superhero show there is on TV, and that its characters deserves a place in the MCU films itself.

Artemis9991

Don't make assumptions with this show. 9 times out of 10 you will be dead wrong.

Mten10th

Well, even with Garrett they brought in his long relationship with Coulson throughout the season which allayed some suspicions. And remember this episode came out 4 days after Winter Soldier so a lot of people were in shock about that movie and not registering that some regulars or semi regulars would be involved.

Aes86

There was a con called Paleyfest I think that year, that came out right before episode 16 and all the actors from AoS were there. One of the questions was about Ward's development and would there be changes, you could see this smile come across his face before he told them they should see some changes but ask him after the next episode or something to that effect. Was just funny seeing the timing of that event right before this all came down. Actually Alvin posted it below :P

Aes86

Honestly cannot wait for the rest of your reactions. The character development in this show are phenomenal, and the twists are so well written! Tuesday has become the highlight of my week!

You are now in the best parts of shield each episode with (very few exceptions) are better then the last.

Christopher simeon

Okay.. I had to give one more example. Remember when Garrett first showed up, and he was talking about being Ward's SO. He says something to the effect of, "You wouldn't believe what I can talk this guy into" while talking about Ward. Yet another example of this being planned out way in advance and a line that makes so much more sense in retrospect.

Calculatus Eliminatus

Now, it still has some speed bumps along the way, a lot of it having to do with budget, Network TV limitations and what fans like to call "one-way continuity," where it connects to the films, but the films don't connect to it. Eventually, they kind of just stop giving a crap about what the films are doing and just do their own thing, which is for the best in my opinion. But I'll tell you...this show is a true hidden gem. I'm glad you made it through to the good stuff.

Trent Bowles

I want you guys to put yourself back in 2013. A show debuts called "Agents of SHIELD," and everyone is told that this is going to be an inside look into an organization so important to the MCU, starring everyone's favorite agent."It's all connected," they tell us. Then it debuts, and it is your typical network fare. Monsters of the week, procedural secret agent stuff with some Marvel references stuffed in. Most people abandon it. Then, Captain America: The Winter Soldier comes out, and at the end of that movie, SHIELD doesn't exist. Most of us thought "Boy, the showrunners are screwed now, their entire concept has gone down the drain." Then this episode airs, and you realize that this was all part of the plan. That shitty procedural was a cover, and Episode 17 is in fact Episode 1 for the ACTUAL show. And the actual show is AWESOME.

Trent Bowles

And that cover up with the level 8 agents she mentions is Coulson's resurrection. Although Fury classified it as level 10 and didn't share the file with anyone. All of the people present and directly involved in it would be aware of it and this would create evidence of a conspiracy between them all. Seeing the hydra stuff and this hush hush stuff involving Coulson that she isn't involved in herself would of course raise huge suspicions.

HYDRO?

Rufus May

And to your point about the earlier episodes, they were exactly required to give everyone in the episode the context and backstory we needed. For example: Why would Hand think Coulson is Hydra? Well, we've learned enough of her from the previous episodes that she is quite the sticker for going by the book. It's part of her nature, her character. Now, if they had just introduced her now and "told us" that she's a by the book person, it wouldn't be as clear as why she did what she did. They SHOWED us in previous episodes how she is. So, for her character, it does add up that Coulson is bad. And finally, when she deviates from "by the book" to let Ward kill Garrett, she pays for it. She was never bad or evil, just a character, drawn from the comics, that was very loyal to SHIELD. (and I've reached my comment limit for the day).

Calculatus Eliminatus

I hope

Justin Jefferson

From what I heard, this was planned but the cast didn't know at first. I remember some of the cast talking about their reactions to reading the script for this episode :P

Justin Neason

They write and plan out the whole entire season, that's what makes it so great.

Teddy S

Anyone know if they're doing 2 episodes today?

Teddardstark

You're all going through the same denial I went through. Not Ward! He must be...undercover?

Kelly Parks

Hail Hydra! Finally!

Kelly Parks

I'm sure they're fine with constructive criticism.

Heru Muharrar

Gah! It ends with asking if we want to watch the next one, and of course that answer is yes, but we have to wait a week! You're killing us! ;-)

Doug C

Another thing to at least consider. Be before I type it, I am a patron because I do WANT to see your reactions so please don't take anything I say as a negative from that perspective. I think that, at least with regards to this show, as a group you are spending so much time questioning everything and nitpicking things that don't make sense (AT THE TIME) that you are missing out on some of the more clever, subtle things going on. Sometimes its just an off hand comment from a background character that is the clue, other times its just a momentary look on the actor's face. I too had to learn to trust the writers and quit thinking everything was inconsistent or a plot hole. Without doubt, the show has them but way too many times, something I thought was silly or wrong turns out to be exactly what was right and make perfect sense. We can chalk that up to brilliant retcon writing or superb planning. As I suggested above, on re-watch, many of them are simply superb planning. Overall though, I do very much enjoy the reactions and discussion.

Calculatus Eliminatus

My bad! That link was just a short bit of it. Yeah, watch it on Amazon. Now that the ball is really rollling, I'd be quite surprised if it didn't endear you to the cast and creatives even more. https://smile.amazon.com/Marvels-Agents-S-H-I-L-D-PALEYFEST/dp/B00Q1C0LA0

The answer to your question is here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tswzxn8bcKc. But you can stream it free on Amazon Prime in full length and better quality.

Alvin Cura

This is where things gets good.

olof

also great to see you guys get excited for AoS, i'm always looking forward for your Shield reactions, can't wait for you to watch the next few episodes and ultimately catch up with everyone. It's gonna be wild ride from here on to the end of season 5.

Sascha Koch

You should do the finale live.

Aes86

I remember an early interview with Clark Gregg after The Winter Soldier came out and he said that Marvel actually took them all into a screening room to watch the movie early and when they left it they were like "So wait...do we have a show anymore? Do we change the name?" lmao the WRITERS though were informed about what was going to happen very early on when the show got picked up for a full season they just had to kind of hold out until the end of the season after the movie came out so they could move things forward. This show is insane they are SO good at planting seeds and following through sometimes a few episodes later and sometimes a few seasons later. Glad you're starting to get why we're all so passionate about it!!

Linsey Morris

Ward killed 3 innocent agents.

Mten10th

Thats why ward shot the fake clairvoiagnt, becuase he was on garrets/the real clairvogents team. And he alos tried to shoot may after Siv got the necklage thing on her, becuase may was the biggest threat. The clues were there all along.

Nudeldifudel

I hope you guys are able to catch up before season 6 starts! That would be awesome! U have a year!!! lol Great reaction, looking forward to the rest!

Macy

they mentioned the events with Captain America at the end when you were talking over it. Those events happened at the same time, no one said this happenend after Winter Soldier, only you guys should watch the movie before this episode for more background knowledge.

Sascha Koch

Everything is always connected. This is one of the best written shows and best planned shows I have ever watched. Your getting into the real good stuff now and it only gets better year to year with very few weak episodes or filler really.

Andrew Courtney

Coulson and Mae are the only other two people who knows that Skye is an 0-8-4.

Mten10th

Wow Rana! I'm impressed. I think you must really have an uncanny ability to observe and understand people, cause you are really good at getting the measure of characters in multiple different shows.

Edwin Wickey

If you ever ask, "did they plan that?" with this show the answer is always yes. There are so many things in the past 16 episodes that tie into this one. Little things. Like remember when Ward shot at May after that Asgardian already had been restricted? 100% on purpose. Season 5 wrapped last month and there are payoffs from S1. And yes Suraj the show is no longer a procedural. It’s all serialized from here!

Heru Muharrar

I see you guys still have all the questions. Shield will answer them but they take the time to do it right. There are no quick fixes, and there are serious repercussions in this universe. Just sit on the edge of your seat and enjoy!!!

Andrew Courtney

That was fantastic!

Edwin Wickey

This caught me off guard the first time because Garret was the obvious traitor and they faked us out by making us think that was the big twist. And also, Grant was literally the first protagonist we see in the show, he was like the boy scout of the team in a way xD

Justin Neason

And there are other things to come (Season 2) that were planned since the pilot as well. The writers are in it for the long run and that makes rewatching SHIELD so much fun.

JustABody

The show runners have said it was planned. In fact, on rewatch, you can see so many things that lead up to this. And that goes for all other characters too. In Seeds, Skye is at the wall of fallen agents as Coulson is taking about darkness and evil in the world and the camera pans to Ward. In Yes Man, Loralei's spell is broken but Ward still takes a shot at May. A perfect excuse to kill her without repercussions, He killed the fake Clairvoyant to protect Garrett. Hydra is mentioned in Seeds. And even in first couple of episodes the talk about how centipede is so well funded and must be huge and yet SHIELD knows nothing about them. It was all planned. Things that May might do or say or how she reacts, have far more meaning and make perfect sense when you finally get the full story. Same for all the characters.

Calculatus Eliminatus

hype ! Sad that Pat couldn't make it
