the Jinora stuff is definitely random and unexplained, but honestly its not any better than the ability to suddenly gain the ability to remove bending that Aang got at the ending of ATLA. not EVERYTHING in ATLA was explained mickey.

Guru Pathik said that if Aang closed his Cosmic Energy off by not letting go of Katara he wouldn't be able to use the Avatar State. The cycle is ended when Raava is taken out because she allows for the rebirth to happen. So Korra was the last Avatar if Raava stayed disconnected from her. Raava leaves a dying Avatar to re-enter the next Avatar baby. If the Avatar is in the Avatar State when killed, the cycle is ended because both Raava and the Human Cosmic Energy is connected and therefore both suffer the consequence of the death.

The cosmic energy is a journey each Avatar has to do on their own. Aang couldn't control the Avatar State because it is a harmonizing of the Human Cosmic Energy (the balance Guru Pathik talked about) and Raava (the ability to manipulate all of the past avatar memory and bend all of the elements). So I personally like how the additional information didn't retcon anything which was a concern when I first wathed the show.

I think it is just Jinora being connected to the spiritual side. Aang recognized HeiBai from the BlackWhiteScreamer monster in the original ATLA. He had never seen the panda before but his POV changed from Screamer monster to the HeiBai panda. So having a spiritual side has some advantages when dealing with spiritual issues. Jinora is able to recognize that Raava was inside Dark Avatar.

I went back to watch your ATLA reactions again! Suraj had mentioned that they spun it on the wheel, which is why they were watching it. Just imagine if it never landed on ATLA...I know from your journey so far, how much it has influenced your lives. The show has so many good values, and you can comprehend them even as a kid. I think it is awesome that you guys took a lot of what they taught to heart. The show has such a large following, but I believe everyone should watch it. Especially nowadays when it could be used the most.

OH FUCK. I just remembered what Uncle Iroh said this season, "If you look for the light, you will often find it, but if you look for the dark, that is all you will ever see" Korra couldn't find the light because she literally lost it, with Raava gone all she could see was darkness so even with Raava seemingly right in front of her she couldn't see it. Korra's intention was to look for the light, but just like the episode with Iroh, her actions didn't match her intention, she sought a physical and violent encounter with Vaatu and it produced nothing (except monster fight badassery), once Jinora showed up, she was able to peacefully "release" Vaatu and regain Raava (she even says "go in peace", like Unalaq did with the first rebel spirit).....i still may disagree with the use of Iroh, but this season keeps growing on me

Jinora's spirit shenanigans i think derive from her role as spiritual guide to Korra, she's the only one who could see Raava's presence in the air temple, Korra couldn't find Raava alone (Raava was always inside Vaatu/Unalaq/Bavatar, I don't think Jinora just made her magically appear inside him) so she needed someone, the only someone, proven to be sensitive to Raava and that was Jinora....so basically she's a really fancy version of the find my iphone app...but Raava is the iphone

God yall are gonna be blown away by season 3. It's literally the best thing to happen in the avatar universe. It's definitely a reward for having got through the mess that was season 2!

I think ofwhat happened with jinora was that she always had belief and especially hope within herself to let raava grow strong again .Korra definitely chose light over darkness and became that giant spirit version of herself but she definitely had doubts in terms of being strong enough to defeat vaatu. Tenzin just learned something new about himself so he was probably still a bit insecure if he could help in any way. Thats what i think happened

1. Actually, it was mentioned of why Unalaq has been doing all these things. At the very beginning of the episodes he mentions how after the 100-year war, the Southern Water Tribe lacked spirituality and how its citizens made celebrations that had no connection to the spirits. Basically, Unalaq wanted to restore spirituality to this Tribe (Theocracy). Not only that, but he as well wanted to open the spirit portals so the human and spirit realms could live together harmoniously. However, by fusing with Vaatu and becoming a Dark Avatar, he took his ideologies way too far which is why Korra needed to stop him. 2.) The spirit portals were not mentioned in the ATLA because it was not related to the plot. Its main plot was the tyrannical invasion of the Fire Nation that wanted world domination. 3.) Many say that Unalaq was horribly written as a villain; however, for me it was not. Yes, he is just a person somewhat similar to Firelord Ozai who just wants power and control over the world; however, as I said before he wanted to restore the spiritual ways of the Water Tribe and bring together peacefully the human and spirit realms by opening the spirit portals. 4.) I can see an understanding of why so many people hate this "back and forth love triangle" as you said. However, if you put yourself to think, they are teenagers who not only are helping out the Avatar in bringing peace to the world, but as well being themselves who are going through personal things. Teenagers normally do these kinds of errors in their lifetimes. Similarly, with ATLA Aang was not only the Avatar, but being himself as goofy kid. 5.) Korra did get some spiritual guidance from Iroh, Jinora, and Tenzin. Also take into consideration that due to the short number of episodes that they were provided , they were not able to go into in depth analysis of her spiritual training. 6.) The battle between Unalaq/Vaatu and Korra's spirit was certainly something that we have never seen in the Avatar Universe; however, it was comprehensible in a sense that Korra's spirit was able to grow enormously so as UnaVaatu due to Harmonic Convergence where all spiritual energy was amplified in both worlds like Jinora mentioned while she was at Won Shi Tong's library.

Simple reasons why Book 2 gets heavily criticized (NO Spoilers for season 3 and for 4, just as for season 2): 1. Lack of explanation and convenience. They dont explain Unalaq's reason for wanting to release vatu other than because he wants to. They dont explain the power converting of dark spirits in to light spirits. Unalaq says he needs korra then says he dosent to open the spirit portals multiple times. Jinora's role in all of this (how sway???) 2. The first half of season 2 they had diagloue episodes that were confusing and vauge. why wasn't the spirit portal mentioned in the first avatar series? wouldn't that have made aang's journey mucccch easier? 3. Unalaq is horribly written. He the villian who's evil just cause with no real motive. 4. the back and forth Love triangle 5. Korra's lack of spirtual guidence; in this book, spirits take up physicality rather than korra learning how to become more in touch with her spiritual side (they couldve extended her learning how to control the avatar state but she was in control since episode 1) 6. The Boss Battle : it was kind of cool but was extremely odd for "spirits" and the avatar series in general (Very Power Ranger-esque) less martial arts and more wrestling as well. Season had good moments with Avatar Wan Aang's and Katara's Line Uncle Iroh and Varrick, but other than that everything else seem bland and unnecessary. In its defense, season 2 is talk about very badly because its compared to the original series and the seasons of korra you have yet to watch.

Here’s the explanation: Basically the only thing the show didn’t really explain is how Jinora is so spiritually powerful; the answer is that she is basically a spiritual prodigy like Azula was with firebending and she also had a power boost with Harmonic Convergence. At the end she used her powers of sensing spiritual energy to locate and illuminate Rava within Vatu/Unalaq. This allowed Korra to see and take Rava back and then vanquish Vatu while he was momentarily weakened. Because Korra did not imprison Vatu in the tree, he will now slowly regrow within the Avatar over 10,000 years just like Rava would have grown within the Dark Avatar if Vatu had won. When Rava was destroyed she was immediately reborn within Vatu, Korra was only able to take her out because it was still Harmonic Convergence. Rava became a blank slate in terms of the past Avatars so when Korra re-fused with her she started a new cycle of Avatars. There aren’t any plot holes other than the explanation as to how Jinora is so powerful and instinctively knew what to do.

Why do people give Jinora so much flak for her Deus Ex, but no one gets pissy about the lion turtles? Jinora at least gets expanded on next season, the lion turtles you had to wait years for any kind of explanation. Either way, I like them both.

I think at this point you’ve already reacted to 3x1 but I think it’s important to note that the ability to bend has to do with a type of spiritual energy that a person has or how much of said spiritual energy they have. There’s also a physical side of bending that can be chi blocked or in extreme cases cut off completely by bloodbending. Just to try to clear up some things as you continue watching the show. Also I think Nahid is really gonna like 3x2 😂

Unalaq knew about Wan from talking to Vatuu Tenzin knew about the tree from Aang who learned about the ancients from the lion turtle. There's also likely legends about the tree that have been passed down over the years.

Explanations: Giant Korra came about by her doing what Tenzin said and bending the energy within herself. How did Tenzin know about that? It's what the lion turtle told Aang at the end of TLA when he gave him the ability to take away bending. Raava and Vatuu can never die. When one is destroyed, it starts regrowing within the other. When Korra was fighting Vatuu she did what Uncle Iroh told her to and searched for the light (if you search for the light you can usually find it). She's looking within the darkness (Vatuu) for the light (Raava). But she couldn't find the light. Then Jinora appeared to play her role as the Avatar's spirit guide and was able to find Raava within Vatuu and showed Korra. It was bringing around all the themes of the season (the water tribe civil war mirroring the war between Raava and Vatuu - two parts of the one whole) in one place, albeit with no real explanation.

I don't believe it was as out of nowhere as some people say, but it definitely could've been explained better. For the severed connection to the past lives, how I always saw it was Raava was the USB and the past lives was the data in it. The data basically got corrupted or destroyed and thus, wasn't salvageable. And so the cycle of Wan has ended, and Korra's has begun! S3 hype!! Let's do the thing!

To comment on what you said about people's frustration with Korra getting her bending back. I believe that to be okay as something was taken from her ( her bending of 3 elements ), and when she reached her lowest point she was able to connect to the avatar state which reconnected her to the 3 elements she lost. I find Aang's situation in ATLA as more of a deus ex machina. For the latter half of season 3 Aang struggled with his ideals on how he was going to defeat the fire lord. This was a big thing for him because he was a monk and believed all life is sacred. But instead of him overcoming his selfish ideals and doing what Yangchen said, a fucking giant ass lion turtle comes along and says don't worry i'll give you this power so you don't have to kill him. All that build up and struggle within himself was all for naught. I still liked it, just didn't expect it.

I said this in my own comment, but Jinora is mostly just doing the same thing she has been doing all season: sensing spiritual energy. We were shown multiple times that she had an affinity for it, and Harmonic Convergence gave her a serious boost in power, allowing her to sense Raava and show Korra where the light spirit still existed within Vaatu. I think it could have been explained better, but it's not quite as out of left field as it seems imo.

In terms of the Jinora thing, while I think it could be explained better, basically all she did was what she has been doing all season: sense spiritual energy. Due to Harmonic Convergence she got a bit of a power-up, making her ability to sense these things stronger (and allowing the animation team to make it look prettier). She sensed Raava's light spirit within Vatuu, and helped Korra to find it and pull it out again. So it's really the same ability she has been showing for a while, just amplified because of Harmonic Convergence.

The reason I think people don't like book 2 is because it had a slower beginning and a confusing end and compared to the other seasons it doesn't come close. And to help answer your question hopefully the people who created the show said think of rava as a hard drive and that when she was destroyed her memory was wiped of the past avatars.

You guys echoed how I feel. The confusion and over done end of this season is one of my biggest problems with this season. There was very little explanation and it seems like they relied heavily on epic battles and great animation instead of good story telling. I also absolutely hate that they severed all of her past lives one of the best things about the avatar universe was that the avatar could call on previous avatars for help, Korra had just barely got this skill and its taken away. Despite some amazing moments and cameos in this season its still the weakest season as far as storytelling goes and the overdone season finale.

Korra is technically the LAST and the FIRST Avatar. Last because her Avatar reincarnations were disconnected and FIRST because she started a new era of of the Avatar. She basically is a new Avatar Wan.

I think a big issue people had in general with the first two seasons is that any sort of repercussions from characters (mainly Korra) didn't happen. It is somewhat understandable because they thought the show would end each season. But think back to when Korra lost all her bending except Air and then almost immediately got them all back and unlocked the Avatar state. You can see why that is a little aggravating especially when this show is already dragged by teen love and drama which is the main thing Aang struggled with to get into the Avatar state. And then think to this seasons ending. Vaatu (seemingly) destroys Raava. (We all kind of agreed that doesn't happen because as each of them states over and over "Once cannot exist without the other".) And then immediately after the fight, Vaatu is now gone entirely. Its just an issue with the show not allowing actions to have meaningful consequences which again I think is more a symptom of Nick telling them each season was the last.

ALSO NAHID, the reason why Korra decided to remain the spirit portals open is because since she is the AVATAR which is the person that brings PEACE AND BALANCE to the world, she wanted to unite both realms peacefully. Not to cause chaos among them. which is what Unalaq wanted to do as well with the exception of becoming a Dark Avatar.

RANA'S QUESTION: WHY DID VAATU DID NOT COME BACK? The way I think of it in regards of Unalaq and Vaatu being gone is that Korra didn't actually killed them with bending or with any other material thing just like Unalaq destroyed Raava with his waterbending in that "Darkness Falls" episode. Instead, she basically purified their spirits with that waterbending technique that she learned from Unalaq. That is the reason why Vaatu was not reincarnated into another Dark Avatar because its spirit was PURIFIED.

A spiritual projection of Jinora appeared during the battle between Korra's spiritual projection and the fusion of Unalaq and Vaatu known as the Dark Avatar. Surrounded by light, Jinora's spirit brought Raava back to the world by casting a bright light over the Dark Avatar, interrupting his attempted corruption of Korra's projection and allowing Korra to extract Raava before purifying the Dark Avatar.

So heres my theory The way the spirit bunny's fly around Jinora act light moths to a light. I think Jinora naturally conducts Spiritual Energy. Being a descendant of Aang who was touched by a Lion Turtle probably altered the Gene pool. Jinora being the first to be so connected to the spirits acted like a magnet...yeah I'm trying here but anyhow at the finale she probably acted like a Defibrillator to bring Raava back to life. Jinora is just special nuff said.

I always thought that Jinora simply exaggerated her own spirit and positive vibes. That sounds like a hippie explanation, but it goes back to what Iroh said to kid Korra in the spirit world, that when you shine your own positivity/negativity, it will also effect others. So, since all Jinora had to do was "shine" her positive vibes, and since we already knew that Jinora is more in-tune with her spirit, that's all it took to bring out the light (Rava) hidden away inside of Vatu. Thus, Korra could now find Rava inside of Vatu and bring it out.

Jinora has always had a strong connection to spirits. More so than any character we've seen in the series thus far. I believe Jinora used a light from her own spirit to expose where Raava was inside of Vaatu. Korra wasn't going to dissolve Vaatu without getting Raava out of his body. As for is Vaatu being dead, the answer is no. He can't die anymore than Raava can. He is most likely as weak as Raava was when she was trapped within him.

And yeah... no one really gets Jinora’s scene. I don’t think it was explained very well. This is actually one of the reasons people don’t like season 2 as much as the others.

That was always my understanding too. Simply because it came right after Korra attempting to look for Raava in Vaatu, and he says she is gone, and got the drop on her. So it wasn't that much a leap of explanation for me.

There is not really a good explanation. It’s just a deus ex-jinora. That didn’t make the finale less enjoyable for me though so I’m with Rana here. Yaaaaaaayyyy!

It isn't explained very well but then again not everything should be. My impression is that Jinora has always been able to see the light in the spirits, whenever she is around the spirits are always friendly where Korras fears would turn them evil. Korra during the battle at the end couldn't find the light where Jinora has always been able to so it took her to find it so Korra could just rip it out of Vaatu like the barbarian she is. This is the weakest season however but get ready, the next season is great.

So, the general concent about the jinora stuff is that she went back to iroh, she took what was left of “light” in the tea pot (were wan carried rava) and took it back to vatu, where it merged and grew. Remember that iroh tells jinora and korra that “you can still taste a little light on it”.

They explain the jinora thing next book

The Jinora thing was always a bit of a deus ex machina, which still kinda bothers myself and most folks. Even though they built up her "spirituality connection" this season, it still kinda came out of left-field. There WAS actually a moment rewatching the series via one of your previous reactions where I went "OH! That kinda helps explain the Jinora thing at the end!" but for the life of me I can't remember what it was, and it was obviously a spoiler too so I didn't mention it. Anyways, if you can get past that bit, it was still an enjoyable if imperfect finale, although it's nowhere NEAR as good as pretty much the entirety of the next Book :)
