How has he flip-flopped? He said i don't need the AVATAR, not help? Like Siumen said, no one has physically been in the spirit world since the two co-existed, so throwing some assisted elemental force at the dormant portal is new and never been done. It's fair to think he thought that would open it and is why he told Korra she wasn't needed

Also remember due to Eska and Desnas report, he thought she was dead. Someone on youtube said, his desperation is pretty obvious considering the spiritual Unalaq resorted to blatant physical force to try to open the gate.

Noone has ever tried waterbending at the portal because until Korra opened the southern portal no one has been able to get into the spirit world physically.

Like most fans, I would say Season 2 is easily my least favorite season of Korra, particularly the first half, and some of the writing and character development is on the weaker side. That said, I wouldn’t say that Unalaq was flip-flopping at all with regard to his stance on opening the portal. He always knew only the Avatar could do it. When it was clear Korra was no longer going to be compliant, he lied to her in a rage and said that he didn’t need her even though he knows he still did. He sent the twins after her because he still needed her to open the portal. Then, when they failed to bring her back, he tries to open the portal himself out of desperation, not wanting to face Vaatu empty handed.

I don't think the detectives are villains. They are just incompetent and merely a part of the systemic failure of law enforcement. Blame their training and their bosses.

Lin Beifong so far in this season is completely useless. The Lin from season 1 would have fired those corrupt detectives so fast. It's like the writers just forgot about her until the last minute and then decided to just make her an antagonist to Mako's character.

Mako and Bolin were in the triple threat when they were kids. In season one mako mentioned it that after their parents death mako had to be the responsable one and make money so that’s how they joined the triple threats

The rest of this season is pretty good, especially compared to the first half. But the third and fourth seasons are when this show reaches ATLA levels of greatness

Unilauq has been talking to Vatau not Raava. Vatau is the red dark spirit imprisoned in the Tree and Raava is the connection to the Avatar spirit

Ok so first of all the lion turtle that aang talked to didn’t restore his chi he gave aang energy bending second its was a spirit of a dragon it was a dragon that was in the spirit world just like Juan’s cat deer was in the spirit world third the lion turtles were so long ago that ppl forgot about them and then thought the animals were the first benders
