I highly recommend the manga. It's even better than Brotherhood in my opinion. There are a number of small scenes that are left out, and while BH is a good adaptation overall, the small changes do actually add a lot to the story. There's a lot in the manga that's more fleshed out. Like the Chimeras in Greed's crew. It's true they had more time in the 2003 anime, but there was also more to them in the manga. They talk about their backstories, and it's really very heartbreaking, and goes toward making them sympathetic from the start.

Watch the original anime if you want to be depressed - there is a lot of dark and fucked-up stuff going on. It's good, but some positivity would have been nice instead of having all that suffering all the time.

Here's the mental math Ed did to confirm Al can come back: 1. People can't be brought back to life 2. Al's soul is currently in the suit of armor 3. Al's either alive, or his soul is fake 4. He confirmed it was really Al and not a fake 5. Which means Al's body has to be alive somewhere 6. And since he pulled Al back from beyond the gate, that's probably where his body is 7. And if he can pull Al back, there has to be a way to pull his body back too.
