2018-10-03 06:26:59 +0000 UTCThis show is scripted but it follows very closely the true story of the creation of the FBI's Behavioral Science Unit and the use of criminal profiling in solving crimes. The two main characters are based off John Douglas and Robert Ressler, the two real FBI agents who started the unit. For the most part, the killers they meet throughout the show are, name and all, pretty much verbatim of the killers they're based off of.

2018-10-02 21:20:15 +0000 UTCI think it's quite relevant to our society now, as we tend to assume explanations and excuses are one and the same (even if we think we don't). People often use the childhood of a killer/rapist to excuse their present behavior, under the guise that it's an explanation. However it's important to remember the difference. If someone is asking "why did this person do what they did?" the following response is an explanation, but if one is talking about the horrific events that took place and someone cuts across them with "well, he/she had a bad childhood" then it isn't an explanation, but an excuse since your using the information to invalidate the anger of the person speaking, trying to force sympathy. Of course, morality is all about situation - a person who stole food for their family is hardly deserving of the same criticism of someone who butchered a bunch of people; you can excuse one with an explanation because one has no real victims and the other does. Once a victim of a crime is in the mix, it becomes morally irresponsible to sympathise with a serial killer. At the end of the day, many people have difficult and traumatic experiences and don't go around killing people who were innocent of committing that trauma. tl/dr: this show WILL challenge you each episode on your morality and perspective of any given situation and you WILL feel immeasurably conflicted on what is right and what is wrong. Someone on Tumblr gave a really good analysis of the show that allowed me to find my footing, as situational morality really throws me (idk, my thoughts get all twisty and my anxiety shoots up, I hate not knowing if something is right or not). I hope you guys don't suffer like I did.

2018-10-02 19:38:44 +0000 UTCThis show is as much about morality as it is about cold, scientific research. It's really upsetting actually, because on the one hand by understanding these killers better you can catch them earlier AND possibly recognise signs of a developing killer in a child. This means the future is a lot cleaner and easier to digest. On the other hand, understanding a killer can become mixed up with sympathising with one and forgetting the fact that, childhood trauma or not, they still inflicted harm on another person. It's a necessary evil to do this work, and one must try and remember the line between research and ethics. I think Holden is off putting to the cops because of how excited he is about the psychology of a killer, appearing as if to excuse said killer's behavior.

2018-10-02 18:36:45 +0000 UTCI studied 1 semester in Psychology with dreams of working in forensic but eventually transferred to a different major, this show is one of my favorite. I think episode 1 is by far the weakest but once a certain character shows up it's a great piece of work.
