Sometimes if someone is REALLY into something, they might be so caught up in it that they don't emote very much. Could also just be that they were trying to focus on the info dump of this episode and trying to think everything through.

This series definitely needs a re-watch. There are a lot of details that go over your head the first time you see them, but when you rewatch them it adds a ton to the story. For example, in episode 18 (part 2, ep 5 on Netflix): Ed: Yeah, the Eastern Sage. It's a story about the origin of Alchemy in Amestris. It claims the entire kingdom of Xerxes was destroy in a single night and that the only survivor wandered into Amestris shortly afterwards. He was the one who went on to spread the science of Alchemy. Fu: How interesting. We have a similar legend in Xing about a drifter from the West. It says that his teachings were combined with our ancient techniques to form the Alkahestry we practice today. [...] We know him as the Western Sage. So based in what you just found out about Hohenheim and Father in episode 40, can you guess who is the Eastern Sage and who is the Western Sage?

What a disappointing reaction to this. Navi would have made this watchable at least with her enthusiasm. Also, why is Marketa always looking so uninterested in a lot of the recent fmab reactions? It kills the mood..

I definitely agree with AJ and Chris’ view that Homunculus, Father, is not inherently evil, he was simply raised in an environment that molded him into it.

Also, you guys are wrong about the Dwarf in the Flask - Father. He's not evil. I mean, he's doing evil things, but, he is not inherently evil. He is just an artificial human. No deeper meaning than that. Just a human with knowledge and desires.

After this episode, I felt so bad for Hohenheim and even understood him more as a character. He never wanted any of this, but he was put in the most fucked up situation there was. All he wanted was a family and a better life, but Father basically twisted that and cursed him with immortality by giving him half the population of Xerxes. Just wow! The sad irony is that when Hohenheim did finally have a family, he had a difficult time getting close because of what he is. Also, now we can see what the first few seconds of Opening 1 was showing. It was literally there all this time xD Wish Navi was here to watch this episode with you guys. Hopefully, we hear her thoughts on it later.

The worst part about your Lost references is that they didn't even make sense. The relation between Hohenheim and Father is completely different from the relation between Jacob and the Man in Black, i'm also a little bit unsure if you really understood Lost.

Mustang uses his man-whore status to get around snooping. All of his subordinates have female code names when they are speaking over the tapped government lanes. Example: Jean Havoc (Jackeline). He flirts with Armstrong to hide that they are working together.

There are many things you say WE don't know but they say it. How did they get the message code across? Did Armstrong understand Mustang? YES, she is the one to send the florist to him, so she got the message that he received the information and they could continue to work together. Going off the deep end while Chris and Marketa are like, "no this was said. not that is not what happened, etc" Seriously the LOST references... I have never watched LOST but now with all of this, I really don't want to see it.

Oh, and that idea about separating the evil out of someone? The show is definitely playing with the Jungian idea of the Shadow, which is the rejected part of the self. It's the things you refuse to believe are true about yourself--the impulses you deny, the desires you're ashamed of, the things that make you question your own morality. In Jung, there are two versions of the Shadow: the personal Shadow and the universal Shadow. The universal Shadow is the same idea applied to humanity as a whole, mixed with the idea of the unknown--it's the dark scary forest, the devil, the force of evil in the world. Many of the "good guy" characters in this show have personal Shadows among the villains; Father is both the universal Shadow and Hohenheim's personal Shadow, Pride is Ed and Al's Shadow, etc...

The similarities with Lost are because both take a lot of inspiration from medieval and Renaissance European alchemy, and especially from Jung's use of alchemy in his ideas about psychology and folklore. A great shoutout to that in this episode with the names Father offers "Slave 23": Philippus Areolous Theophrastus Bombastus von Hohenheim, better known by his pen name Paracelsus, was one of the greatest alchemists who ever lived. He traveled the world as a healer, in the process inventing the science of toxicology, and according to legend was one of the few people to succeed in creating a philosopher's stone.

This episode is my absolute favorite in the entire series. This episode is where you find out the show is just as much about Hohenheim, as it is about Ed and Al. You'll watch the rest of the show through a completely different lens now.

Little fun fact: the voice actor who played hohenheim as a teenager is actually the same VA who played Alphonse in the 2003 series. Also, it was implied that hohenheim's blood freed father from the gate, it didnt create him. Also, you guys talked over the fact that father split all the souls of xerxes between hohenheim and himself
