Adelheid Chapter 7

Adelheid Chapter 7

I thought about Monster Materials, but wouldn't leather armor in this case be on the expensive side? What kind of armor can a beginner adventurer or a new soldier afford? Or there are no affordable options? Also, shouldn't chitin armor (or at least strengthening plates) be a thing if there are giant insect monsters? The material would be really tough IRL if such large insects existed, not to mention strengthened materials due to magic.

I do agree with the hard to repair part, but this is a fantasy world. They aren't using animal skin but monster materials, which will be tougher than real life stuff. In my world, there is a concept of cold iron, which means that regular metals like iron doesn't conduct mana. Living things or formerly living things are more conducive to mana. I will try to keep your words in mind though.

@DCHeanlien in this case, you fall into a common misconception, which is generally not a good thing. It's not making things interesting. Perhaps, I wasn't clear, but it is less about historical accuracy. It is more about realism. You do try to have certain depth to the worldbuilding, no? Leather specifically, is simply badly impractical for armor. There are almost no cuts of leather that are tough enough to be used for armor and plus it is harder to repair if needed. It's just not practical.

I'm not exactly going for historical accuracy. If it makes it more interesting, I'll ignore accuracy. Plus, the existence of magic changes many elements. The clothes Adelheid wore on volume 1 would have been very different.

You should check shadiversity videos on youtube. Leather Armor was not a thing in medieval times. Leather clothing was rare too. As armor, Gambesons were very prevalent. They are cheap to make as they are made from cotton and they are tough and easy to fix. When hardened steel wasn't an option then like 99% it was Gambeson for armor. In Fantasy, leather can be an option - if it is harvested from monsters or fantastical creatures. Also chitin armor can be a thing if there are large insect monsters. Armor made from sea-monsters and lizards can be a thing too in appropriate regions. But these exotic variants are probably expensive, no?
