Episode 096 - I am killing this project

After months of endless work, I am killing two of my latest projects without any release.

The point is, you might be able to do a regular podcast and an occasional "featured series" podcast, to accomplish different goals, and use synergies to make it all financially feasible to continue your wonderful work.

Phil

Example of the podcast serial format is- Rachel Maddow Presents: Ultra #rachelMaddowPresentsUltra https://podcastaddict.com/podcast/4108396 via @PodcastAddict. Website isn't applicable, but includes podcast description and links: https://www.msnbc.com/rachel-maddow-presents-ultra

You can also create independent or special "series" podcasts that serialize more extensive presentations. For example, Rachael Maddow did one about an extremist movement to overthrow the United States government, back in the early 20th century. Not that you have time to go through it all, but as an example of the format:

I actually subscribe to several podcasts. Some are video content, some audio only. A great feature of the podcast is the ability to put links on the front page, to show notes, premium content, tip jar, main website, etc. I imagine this could include a link to your YouTube channel. I'm thinking your YouTube channel could include a link to your podcast. I think there's probably a way to work the two in a synergistic way, that would lighten your workload, once you set it up.

There's an old saying, "Don't let the perfect be the enemy of the good."

Phil

Stay the course and follow your passions. You can reach many with less depth & research on a topic.

I haven't read all of the other comments and listened to the audio because atm im busy but it seems like you have to kill a project because its too hard to create, my idea is to make it simpler, less animations, etc. more static but you do not have to remove the attractive graphics if you want. A lot of my favorite privacy, security, freedom channels out there were able to deliver their point by basically talking on the entire session either on their static camera or background screen while simultaneously having good thumbnails making it easier to edit and publish on time. I think its the reason why they have high output but still high quality and useful/relevant video on my opinion, I can separate high content quality and high production quality.

I think you hold your projects to a very high standard, putting in tons of research and also especially in your videos its clear how much time you put into proper presentation and clean editing. This is something that I appreciate about your work and gives it value, but I can also see how it would limit your bandwidth, and if you are in a pattern of investing tons of time into projects and not being satisfied enough with the results to release them, I think re-thinking things makes sense. I also really believe that what you choose to focus on is important stuff that is hard to learn about elsewhere, and when other people are exposed to it in whatever format it takes, that will become clear to them as well. I have really enjoyed all of your podcasts recently, as its a great way to learn about the things you have spent time researching but in a more organic way, something I can put on while getting my mornings started and take a deep dive into something. I have often thought its almost a shame in some sense that your podcast is only for Patreon supporters because there is clearly so much research behind it and I think it would appeal to a lot of people once they get exposed to it. On the other hand I think you are right that youtube is a great platform for getting your content to new viewers (at least when they aren't actively suppressing your channel like they seem to done have in the past and quite possibly still are) and your well-made, well-polished videos are very approachable and very compelling, so I also would be sad to see them go completely. Personally, from my outside view, I think it might make sense to do both: make shorter, less research-intensive and perhaps less painstakingly edited videos that still lay out these important issues in an easy to find, easy to consume way, and also do a podcast with deep dives where you can expand on some of the nuances and tangential issues of the same topics (or just completely separate topics in a longer format when the video versions don't pan out for whatever reason, so your time spent researching isn't "going to waste"). That way you are still hopefully getting the views on youtube and exposing people to the ideas and you have a place to direct people from there to get further engaged and listen to the podcasts and maybe become patreon supporters down the line when they see the quality of your work and the depth of your research over time. A couple other ideas and considerations: You could possibly hire a video editor to take some of that workload off your shoulders, however it may be expensive and difficult to find someone you would trust with that work. You could take some of these patreon-only podcasts (GrapheneOS guides, LINDDUN series, etc) and release them as a sort of backlog to get the steam rolling on a new public podcast. As someone who has paid for close to a year for access to them, I would happily still support you here and would be happy to see them released to a wider audience, though whether others here would feel the same might be something to consider. In any case, I hope you can get into a new creative flow and don't get overly discouraged by the setbacks as I really respect your work in all the forms its been taking.

May be you can come to the channels like David Bombal, Naomi Brockell which may help to reach the audience. If people like Rob Braxman can come in channel like David Bombal, so i guess u can do the same and presentating evidences of your research during that.
