i think because they realize anyone who's going to write this stuff generally is going to be REALLY young. if someone you looked up to enough to write a weird fanfic about only had negative things to say about something you put time and effort into that would be pretty crushing, especially when you're that young and impressionable. at that point it's not gonna be easy to separate yourself from your work either, so an attack on their writing is going to feel like an attack on their own character.
