Notice how the flashbacks of Tanjiro's scar looks completely different then the one he does now and if you look back at Tanjiro cutting the brother demons head off, His scar changes and morphes even more into the sun breathing mark. So yes he was using sun breathing and it made his control over it stronger. HE DOES have the sun tattoo, he was not born with it though, he unlocked it. I dont remember when. But the flashbacks prove it, the scar looks nothing like the Sun tattoo in the flashbacks.
