A La Carte - AD FREE

Hold the pickles!  A fine demand for the diner but substitutions and limitations aren't necessarily workable in conservation... or are they.  Sometimes the full serving of treatments that a painting may require aren't in play for various reasons; timeline issues, budgetary constraints, or the clients themselves actually like the look of the painting but just want some corrections.  For these pieces, when applicable, it's possible to approach the conservation a la carte.

Somehow, someway I missed the publishing of this video, thus I am very late to the conversation. However, I still feel compelled to say how impressed I am with your work (once again). As you stated, the painting did not look that bad when received into your studio. The seam down the middle and the not-so-perfect touchup could be overlooked in this beautiful painting. But when the final painting was revealed, I literally caught my breath. The finished painting is of such quality that a whole new experience was felt when looking at it. I would love to see this piece in person to experience first-hand a close representation of what the artist tried to convey when creating it. As anyone who has visited a quality museum knows, art comes much more alive when viewed in person and I think this painting (in particular) would be infinitely more appealing viewed in person. Julian...thank you for once more producing a video that leaves me feeling a little smarter and enlightened than I was before watching you wave your magic wand. I always feel better after watching your videos. I am a patron because I believe there is a genuine benefit to watching your work and feel you should be compensated for enriching my life in a way few other genres or mediums can provide. Again...thank you :).

A lovely painting that was a pleasure to see restored! I have only one question. When is a painting considered 'clean enough' to put down an isolation layer. In the work you performed on this painting, some grime came up during the various steps as you discussed. But, you did not separately clean the painting prior to applying the isolation layer and retouching. I know you mentioned that the painting had been 'skinned' previously. Was that the reason?
