Women in a Cold Place Normally Used to Store Food

Perhaps you saw this list:

https://lby3.com/wir/women.html

Women in Refrigerators by Gail Simone.

Gail is an incredible writer and did a bunch of Red Sonja’s for Dynamite years ago.  Her basic gripe is that women in peril are often plot elements to advance male story lines and this just isn’t good for attracting young female readers to the graphic novel genre.

The list includes female characters who were abused or killed to advance the story of their male counterparts, Black Canary is on here…TWICE. Of course, I see this list and am curious about the actual stories. I know Mike Grell had Green Arrow rescue Black Canary several times, and in one particular scenario, rape is alluded to by Dianah's odd behavior following the rescue. I've not read most of these, though.

If you take a look at the list, let me know what you think.

So here are a couple "Women in Refrigerators" images for you.  Actually, they're not really WIR, there's no male counterpart to rescue them.  These ladies are on their own.

Love the witch's expression in Brick, but she might want to turn around. As for the list, not much to say. Comics are still marketed towards boys, and I think it's fair to say that they're more interested in seeing men do awesome things than women.
