ARC 7-Cursed Fates-151-Alana
Added 2024-06-30 09:12:23 +0000 UTCUnder the watchful gaze of a full moon, Alana swung her sword. She was drenched in sweat, her clothes clinging to her hot skin. After they returned from the camp, which Yulia had made a nuisance of herself in for hours, shadowing Alyssa and asking her dozens of questions, she’d grabbed her sword and stepped outside to train. Endless repetitions of the same simple swings until her heart hammered in her chest and her arms ached. Still, she kept going.
It wasn’t that she was fond of exercise. There was a time in her life when she hated it. Hated that she had to work for something her siblings had been born into.
She also didn’t have a talent for it. Witnessing Lancecain duel knights twice his age and come out the victor, so long as the contest remained that of pure swordsmanship, had disabused her of any illusions about that.
But after so many years, so many tiring days and nights collapsing from exhaustion, effort was a part of her. The ache of her muscles centered her in same way a hot cup of tea or a loved one’s embrace did for others. It helped her think. Helped her suppress her emotions when they started to get beyond her control, so she could work through them. And there was a lot to work through.
To her surprise, the devastation the city was the easiest for her to accept. While the scene of the ruined Quest inspired mixed feelings, she searched her heart and found no negative emotions toward Lou.
Her lover tried to be compassionate and failed, her mercy crushed under the weight of the guilds’ reckless arrogance. Alana didn’t fault her for that. Compassion was a pretty thing but she didn’t view it as a virtue. Besides, Lou wasn’t a kind person. She admired the attempt, but she’d doubted it from the beginning. What she expected, no, demanded, if not verbally than with her presence, was that Lou remain honorable.
For all her faults, and there were plenty of those, though Alana had come around to seeing them more as quirks and was even attracted to a couple, Lou was a very honorable person. She was loyal to those who were loyal to her. She treated her friends well and her enemies fairly. She wielded her power with discretion if not the greatest judgment. All virtues few others could live up to.
Victory was as close as Alana had seen to an honorable society, but it was built on a foundation of zealotry. Lou, on the other hand, had no one to teach her honor. Her empathy, as much as she tried to deny it, had guided her to it.
Truly, it was what Alana respected most about Lou, besides the woman’s brazen confidence in the parts of her nature that would make other people shy away in embarrassment. Lou was a good person. The woman herself didn’t believe it. She thought she was a monster. Alana knew better but she was concerned it could become true.
Lou was changing. The business with the guilds had hardened her. Muted her insufferable personality and raging passion. The noblewoman was almost grim and it was unsettling to see.
Change wasn’t a bad thing. Alana wasn’t happy to see Lou sad, that was infuriating, but she also believed that there could be some good to come from it. She’d always feared that Lou’s empathy would get her in trouble. Especially with the wrong woman. This mess had forced her to…Alana hesitated to think mature. Evolve. Or rather, reach an equilibrium. A little grimness to balance out too much passion.
Though it was only good so long as the equilibrium lasted. Alana didn’t want Lou to be consumed by the guilt she pretended she didn’t feel or the burden she realized she carried as someone with the power to exterminate life on a large scale. They needed to restore Lou’s passion.
Something she wasn’t sure how to do.
She’d hoped Yulia’s little stunt would do the trick. Lou enjoyed helping the unfortunate. As she’d learned during their argument in the north, their first real fight, she saw it as helping herself. It made her feel better about herself and the world. Normally, she would have leaped at the camp. Not with real commitment, that was asking too much for strangers whose names she’d never know, but with reckless spending. The fact she’d barely seemed interested, even knowing that Geneva’s spell had gone awry…didn’t bode well.
They’d have to take drastic action.
If only she knew what that action should be. Several hours of cutting the air and she still didn’t have a clue and it was getting harder to contain her frustration at her uselessness.
And that was the real reason why she was sweating buckets instead of eating a delicious dinner and climbing into a warm bed. Her uselessness. She knew becoming strong enough that Lou relied on her rather than protected her would be hard, verging on the impossible. She knew it would take time, more time than she could rightly fathom. Knowing it didn’t make it any easier to wait.
“Surely you do not plan to sweat alone, star.”
Alana paused mid-swing and sighed heavily. She hadn’t heard the elf’s approach. “I’m too tired for your training too,” she groused as Kierra stepped in front of her, smiling softly. That was one person she wasn’t worried about. She’d been concerned while Talia was gone, fearing what the violent woman would do to take revenge if her flower was harmed, but with the taken women returned, the elf had returned to her normal genial self.
“I could fix that.”
“Mentally, you beast.”
“Thank you.”
“Why is it that both of you keep taking insults as compliments?”
Kierra chuckled. “Because we know you mean them as such. If you did not like it, you would not share our bed, hm?”
Alana flushed. “So? What are you doing out here?”
“Looking for you. What has you out here? You do not normally prefer the night to a good meal.”
“I’ve clearing my head. Thinking.”
“About?”
“Stupid things.”
“They are not stupid if they trouble you. Tell me.”
“You’re not going to let this drop, are you?”
“No. The more hesitant you are, the more curious I become.”
“…fine.”
Alana resumed her swinging while the elf stood in a relaxed posture, blurting out her worries. About Lou. About herself. About her inability to fix either. Kierra listened attentively. Alana hated how good of a listener the woman was. Lou was a good ear, but she couldn’t help interjecting, sometimes with something impactful, sometimes with something inane. The little breaks and shortcuts allowed her to catch her breath, keep her balance.
Kierra didn’t interrupt. She didn’t say a word, simply stared at her target. The silence created a pressure that squeezed the thoughts out of her mind and before she knew it, Alana was saying everything, even things she didn’t plan on saying.
There was a good side. Whenever she finished talking to Kierra, she always felt unburdened. It was more effective than hours of mindless exercise, something she proved as she stopped her practice midway through her rant, sheathing her sword and leaning against it.
The elf hummed as Alana finished rambling. “You bring up a good point.”
“What? About our role in Quest’s future? The camp? Yulia? Our lacking strength?”
“Lou’s waning passion. This cannot stand.”
“Or that. I guess you have a plan?”
“Mm, yes. I know just what to do.”
Alana fought not to blush as the elf stepped forward to brush her fingertips over her cheek. Unfortunately, embarrassment wasn’t a muscle that could be trained. She didn’t know why simple things like the gesture continued to fluster her. After all she’d done…all she’d let be done to her. Just thinking about made her face heat up more, defeating the purpose.
“You are right. A conqueror is not a tyrant. We must not let our Lou slide into the darkness. But to stop it will require great work. Great…sacrifice. From you. Can you do that?”
“…what do you have in mind?”
The elf smiled what Lou had deemed her bloodthirsty smile and Alana fought the urge to run. “Something I am sure you will enjoy…eventually.”

2024-08-16 09:44:08 +0000 UTCI feel like you're focusing too much on the current arc. This all started with the guilds kidnapping her friend and refusing to turn him back over. Then they tried to murder her several times (assassins at the hotel and ambushing her in the north with the March) The party she threw when she came back wasn't about the March it was to show the city lord that she refused to be considered a criminal when she was acting in defense of a friend. She then attempted to negotiate with the guilds and believed in good faith that she had succeeded and needed only to attack a single party to eliminate the extremists. The guilds then turned around and started bombing shops to hide their loot. She then again went to investigate the bombings while trying to work out a way to force the guilds to the negotiating tables and they turned around and kidnapped her family and murdered her summoned succubus (as far as they knew) and her friend (again as far as they knew her childhood bully was a friend and guest) It's also crucial to remember that this is all happening over the course of a couple of weeks? Or maybe just a single week actually, I don't remember any signs of a time jump. Plus she is still grieving the death of her father. Oh and they are still trying to determine just how fucked the north is, and there is the entire mess with the seer and dragon combo. The TLDR is that while no, lou is certainly not a good person, she is still a sympathetic villain. The damned guilds are the ones who initiated the March in the first place. The blame rest soley on the guilds who could have easily just opened their coffers. Not like anyone even knew of their super secret treasure in the first place. They could have solved all of this by A, not kidnapping the brewer and attempting to enslave him B, just ask literately anyone why the March was a big deal before using it or C, PAY THE GIRL! The only reason she resorted to such a drastic massacre was the feeling that if she didn't people would keep threatening her family. So she had to show the world the consequence of that.

2024-07-10 08:03:42 +0000 UTCLooking at this comment section, I am reminded of Cultist’s authorial remarks from way back in…I want to say Arc 2 or 3. Cultist blatantly told us, all the way back then, that she was purposely writing a villain origin story. That Lou was the bad guy. That, at some point, Lou would do something each of us would find inexcusable. So when I read comments complaining that not enough is being done to make Lou look like the good guy, I can’t help but imagine Cultist leaning back and going “yes, exactly”.

2024-06-30 22:17:08 +0000 UTCClearly the story bothers you theoneaboveall. But I'm not sure why. I prefer unreliable narrators, that is to say they see the world with their perspective not some absolute "truth". Have you forgotten the chapters from her enemies perspective. They are just as biased.

2024-06-30 18:47:38 +0000 UTCBut she didn't make a genuine attempt to bargain. She only attempted once, with some random hunters, during a PARTY that she threw and as an afterthought, since all serious discussions about serious topics that night were forbidden. After that, she acted twice : Once to MASSACRE the hunters gathering at the merchant place (she literally planned from the start for a massacre, making Alana look heroic with rescues) then to DESTROY the city. Alana going on a tangeant a full chapter about "How much Lou tried to save everyone" when you have 151 chapters showing how little Lou did. She never pressured the hunters, never initiated dialogue, never tried to scout their assets. Argument is "she was reasonnable" but how can you ask 20% when you don't know what means that % ? Without the author plot "hunters won't move the secured treasures" 5/7 vaults would already be empty and far away, rending her whole city destruction MEANINGLESS. She had no idea that treasures of that power were there, cause she never tried to asset the hunters. She had no idea the hunters wouldn't flee with their treasures.

2024-06-30 17:39:57 +0000 UTCYou forget the plot. At no point are we suggesting Lou is good. or even kind. We are saying a genuine attempt was made to bargain. Lou declared war after negotiations failed, AND after hostages were taken, and then she still allowed for evacuations to occur. Still war criminal behavior to be honest, but by this worlds standards, (and some people standards irl) she was more than 'honorable.'

2024-06-30 16:57:47 +0000 UTCI love how you throw the argument of "she threw a party" like it's a solid one. Lou's only 3 decisions this whole arc were Throwing a Party to show she don't care being a "criminal" cause of the Lord and Crown actions. Massacre a party of hunter. Massacre a city. Yeah, she putted a lot of efforts in 151 chapters to not do anything. The March still isn't done.

2024-06-30 15:34:54 +0000 UTCHow did she tried ? She threw a party once and invited a few hunters to kill her. What else did she do ? She planned to go MASSACRE the opposing hunters (being baited by Lucas) Then she planned to destroy the whole city. What else did she do ? Did she used Genva and Bell to scout the guilds treasures and assets ? No, otherwise she would have known before for the treasures. Did she tried to intimidate the guild's leaders ? No, the one at the party weren't. Lou still don't know who is a leader and who isn't (Kierra was shooting people randomly if they were flashy)

2024-06-30 15:31:47 +0000 UTCI think what you all are missing is that she was indiscriminate. Right now there is not much of a difference between her and her opponents. Did she warn the city? Yes. A good thing in everyones book. But she is also responsible for the 4 civilian deaths due to the plague. She might compare them to death due to a harsh winter but in this case she is responsible for it. Winter is a natural cause that nobody can influence. The common population has nothing to do with the guilds. The guilds tried to hide themselves behind them. I dont like to bring politics as a comparison into this but it fits really well. Without speaking names, if you kill innocents because you want to kill the criminals who are hiding behind them then you are not better than the criminals. Neither honorable, just, kind, in the right or anything. Just the same common criminal or mass murderer. Because the 4 werent the only deaths she is accountable for. Kierra already said the word tyrant. Thats pretty much what Lou is in the moment. She doesnt care about any innocents because she is strong enough to not care. Just like the guilds and nobles. Not one iota better and should be brought to the noose, because she didnt direct the violence completly towards its intended target. The big blob that she were was as indiscriminate as the plague. Its like nuking a small city just to get to a few guys who are actually responsible for anything. And you shouldnt forget that she only tried diplomacy with the guilds. I dont remember her negotiating with the common populace. She just assumed that they are not an entity to be considered. Just bystanders who either die in the crossfire or not. Did she have a right to be upset, mad and in fear for the lifes of the kidnapped members of her household? YES! Did she have the right to just kill anyone who had nothing to do with the guilds because of that? NO. In my books she is not an anti-hero anymore but just the same filth as the other people who wield power.

2024-06-30 14:11:18 +0000 UTCShe threw a party inviiting specific individuals to spread the word of how durable she is. They tried to arrest her. She had a meeting at a neutral location (the hotel) where they basically refused to negotiate and then sent assassins after her and her house. She held annother meeting at the estate where they basically fed her information in order to lure her away to kidnap her house. At no single point did they deal in good faith, and they were overtly aggressive and hostile the entire time.

2024-06-30 13:01:34 +0000 UTCAs the others, i also disagree. Lou was planning to be reasonable, attempt diplomacy to help get the guilds out of a hole they dug themselves. But at no point the guilds approached her in good faith, every single time they tried to fuck her or other people over. They manouvered her into a position where her only course of action was letting them trapple her or put on an overwhelming show of power.

2024-06-30 12:33:04 +0000 UTCWarning the city and the guild as well as only planning to take a percentage of everything is merciful, reasonable even when all attempts at diplomacy failed. Plus the "merchant party massacre" was a raid. One that was even planned for by the guilds to have lou take out a different faction. And she didn't just willy nilly massacre a city, her loved ones were kidnapped and held ransom. Lou did considerably much to resolve this Peacefully. It's not "good" nor "honorable" to let others people trample on you. I don't see how else she could've resolved it with words or otherwise. If you do know please enlighten me.

2024-06-30 11:49:06 +0000 UTCLou tried for I don't know how many chapters and they keep insisting on the mistake. Or more precisely, the guild didn't want their secret stash revealed.

2024-06-30 11:48:56 +0000 UTCAuthor, I think it's time to bring someone in Lou's entourage that will stop saying "Oh damn Lou you really tried hard" cause, it's false, she didn't even tried. She threw a party. Maybe use Alyssa to rain down the pillars of truth to her to "reignite her passion" ? Cause rereading the whole Arc at once really put the accent on that bias from the household. Lou came back into the city, threw a party, and that's it. There is nothing about that arc that makes Lou seems "good" or "honorable". She went to the merchant party to do a massacre, then did it again city wide. Love makes Alana and co blind, but not the reader.
