It is kind of funny in a way, in the early seasons Ash can pull up to any random competition and be good at it, but when it came time to fight in Kanto's Indigo Pokemon League he lost his first fight in the top 16, I guess it's kind of a consolation prize? I do agree with you though, I think it would have been better if Ash lost a few more fights and competitions in the early seasons. Without spoiling of course, I do feel like the anime team learns and improves over time though.
