I don't think frontman was lying about his wife. However, I think it's an event that happened in the past before he became frontman rather than in the present. That's also why he was so triggered by thanos telling him to take care of his own child. His wife and kid probably died while he was trying to make money.

So regarding Front Man, he was mostly telling Gi-hun the truth during their talk. I think it was episode one of season two where you learn some of his backstory with his brother visiting the wife's grave and talking to their mom about Front Man's past. So basically, Front Man was telling the truth about his motivation to enter the games the first time but the timeline's off since his wife's already dead

In real life, his real name TOP was a blacklisted actor/musician and shamed in South Korea for smoking weed. He was near broke; bit fortunately he was good real life friends with Gi-hun. So what happened was Gi-hun went to the Squid Game director and had TOP become part of the show. Now his character Thanos was one of the highlights of Squid Games especially here in America people loved him for the Engrish used in the show. Great comeback story.
