Yeah, Fry's dad is really interesting. He meant well, but he was also definitely an asshole to his son. He wanted to make his son tough and tried getting there by being relentlessly negative and never supporting his dreams. I guess what we can take from it is that you cannot say how your parents feel about you from how they act, but that doesn't mean that whatever way they act is okay.
