No, everyone wasn't "British" at that point. There were "the British" who lived in Britain, and "the colonists" who lived in the American colonies. While the colonists considered themselves British for a number of years (up through the Seven Years War), the way British nobility treated them like a conquered colony instead of as British citizens who were living somewhere else (most famous example being Britain simply imposing taxes upon them without representatives in parliament—something that was supposed to be guaranteed to all Englishmen) lead to many colonists growing resentment and seeing themselves as something other than British. By the time the war broke out, only a third of the colonists saw themselves as British. Another third were undecided, and the final third—the ones that included the Sons of Liberty (like Paul Revere) saw themselves as independent and decidedly NOT British.
