The details we learned about the Shikon jewel are based on real Shinto belief by the way, that every soul, even the souls of gods are actually composed of 4 different souls forming 1. Inuyasha, as you cmaybe can guess, takes a lot of inspiration from Shintoism, Zelda is another series I know that takes inspiration from it as well. that's also the reason why we can have both Kagome and Kikyo running around at the same time despite them both having the same soul, in Shintoism multiple people with the same soul can exist at one time.
