They treated them like the bottom of society; losers in the crotch of society who you might become if you didn't do well in school or you started drugs. Then after a few years of the economy turning, they all suddenly accepted mutants; and even wanted to be mutants instead of their elite positions. Oh wait... That was just plumbers.
