I've mentioned it before, but the Pokémon anime does kind of do its own thing. It does adapt things from the games, but early on it's very much a slice of life adventure series, were there's not really any major threats yet and things are mostly peaceful, the first two game generations were very story light as well, so it makes sense. You'll start to see the series go through a number of changes as we go through each generation, it's honestly interesting to see in retrospect, because it's a bit of a time capsule of how anime changed over the years as well (like, you genuinely would never have seen things like One Piece's Wano arc animation style without some of the things the Pokemon anime later experiments with). We will get some big ongoing arcs later, when the games also had more story. The newest series has honestly surprised me a lot with just how many risks they've taken, the story has been really fun.
