I like Johto's starter Pokemon, Totodile, Cyndaquil, Chikorita, they're fun designs. You're right, in the games the main professor of each generation does have a tree themed name such as Oak and Elm, the Switch era games did stop the naming theme though, their area of expertise is also based on either something important to the story, or some new feature, that's why Elm's is on breeding, because that was one of Gen 2's big additions, breeding pokemon.
