Subaru dying is both painful and scary to him regardless of his respawn ability. In that last part when he broke down crying on Emilia's lap shows how it's been affecting him mentally and how he's been forcing himself to hide it and pretend nothings wrong because he's decided it's what's needed to be done to protect those he cares about. I think a major trait of Subaru is he puts on a brave happy face for those around him even at the cost of burdening himself with physical and mental exhaustion.
