Another thing to note, while anyone in the one piece universe is capable of using Observation and Armament, you have to be born with the ability to use Conquerers haki, and it cannot be learned if you were not born with it.

I hope you don’t mind me explain Katakuri’s ability; Remember, Rayleigh explanation on haki and there are 3 forms of haki: Observation/Color of Observation: Allows users a sixth sense of the world around them and limited precognitive abilities. When Luffy able to dodge moves, he senses them by using observation Armament/Color of Arms: Allows people to armor themselves or weapons, whenever their body turns black or their swords that’s when they activate this one. So when Luffy makes his fist black he uses Armament. Conquerors/Color of Supreme King: Allows user the ability to overpower the will of others. The rarest haki form, the one that intimidates people and knocks them out. It’s the rarest one to posses, besides Luffy all the Emperors posses it. Rayleigh mentioned to Luffy that it’s possible to further trained these abilities to another form aka an awakening state. Now Katakuri has AWAKENED his observation haki, so this allows him to physically see the future 5 seconds ahead.

Yep, might have been useful to let the strawhat crew know that there was someone around who could see the future when they're about to perform a very delicate ambush. Not that it would make a whole lot of difference as far as Luffy is concerned though, he does his own thing regardless of the plan heh.
