We established a while back that Johan may have multiple personalities. The good sweet guy who hangs out with orphans and the evil monster that drives them to suicide. It's really a Jekyll and Hyde sort of situation, where Jekyll at one point decides he's forever through with the potion that turns him into Hyde. In the original story Jekyll was a well respected member of the community, but had a dark side to him. Given it was written in Victorian times this could've been anything from indulging in prostitutes to being a closeted homosexual. Hyde is a vehicle that allows him to indulge in these nameless desires while maintaining the good reputation of Jekyll. In the end though as he indulges more and more Hyde takes over more and more. Until eventually Jekyll is unable to return to himself after spontaneously turning into Hyde. At which point he kills himself. Very similar to what Johan tried to do when he had Nina shoot him.
