Instead of the roles of prisoners and guards, the different groups were different armies of different countries. It's been said that the best way to make people kill your enemy is to turn them into monsters. With this experiment the end goal was no doubt to have the same attitude toward all human life. An army like that would any Dictator's wet dream.
