It's pretty important to clarify that this was Ifrit automatically protecting it's Master and not Leon ordering it. Leon is a dick but not to the degree that he'd kill the girl for something like that. He's not caring enough to stop someone else from doing it though.

They are often described as a sub-type of Jinn (Genie to most of the Western world), it is said if an Ifrit possesses someone that person will become strong and brave, but will also be driven insane. (Seems to fit Shizu to a T, when you think about it). The association with fire, seems to come from Roleplaying Games, like Dungeons & Dragons or numerous video games that borrow ideas from D&D. It might originate from the fact that Ifrit are referred to as Demons, which in Western Mythologies are usually associated with fire.
