It's just how he copes with situations like these. Connie and the others however do not know this, making it seem pretty heartless from their perspective.

With the, let's call it distant and aggressive (especially towards Hange), attitude Eren has portrayed up to this point in the season, I think this could be dubbed the "Eren, what's going on in that head of yours, please don't end up being a villain" arc. At least that's what was going through my head when watching it.
