I interpreted "fists are light" as when you're champion you have more to protect. Date saying that to ippo is basically saying there's less at stake if Ippo loses. and the motivation of that is the extra strength Date and Takamura get as Champions

At any age, a person can accumulate injuries that diminish effectiveness, but the vibe I've gotten here is that, at 28, it's time to start thinking about retirement home plans. :-D

I separated from the Army in my early 30's because my ankle was torn up and I was developing respiratory problems. I got out before they got too bad, And I knew guys who had already had multiple surgeries on ankles, back and knees. Rough works wears you down.
