The interesting thing about Onizuka is that it's a sequel to a manga about him and his friend when they were high school delinquents. But the sequel got way more popular that hardly anyone ever talks about the first manga anymore

Ahhh, This series is slightly difficult to get into at first. But it gets better, just hang tight. As for what Onizuka is doing and the amount of trouble he could get into... A lot. Age of consent in Japan is 18, only exception being a special exception for marriage around the age of 16, for women, and 18 for guys. Even if that were not the case, it's definitely seen as sleazy and unprofessional. So, yea, he's being a creep. Keep following the series, it gets better as it goes and the characters grow on you.

I respect the sub or dub decision. Like there are a few characters that sound like cheap porn (although a lot of anime from this time sounds like cheap porn) but at the same time I like a lot of the dub cast

I am so happy you're reacting to GTO! Not only is it a great show, but it's the show that lead me to my favorite slice of life genre. Onizuka, in the 1998 live action drama, is played by an actor/singer known as Takashi Sorimachi, whom played Furiya Enzo in the 2003 live action drama of Hotman. That character is my inspiration for my name and is the guy in my profile picture. Only thing that keeps me from sponsoring it is that there's no legal place to stream it with good quality. Maybe sponsor the manga.. hmm. I'll introduce you to Hotman sooner or later.. hold me to my word!

Oh damn, this is a classic. Great series, probably good watching material for anyone who is thinking of becoming a teacher as well, in terms of how difficult it can be to be a teacher.

I actually prefer dub for this series, mostly because Onizuka's VA is just GREAT! (See what I did there?) But the rest of the cast is ok too, so it doesn't take away from experience... What does take away however is how some jokes are "lost in translation" /in censorship... Onizuka's english voice is by Steven Blum (Orochimaru/Zabuza/Spike...) while his Japanese VA Wataru Takagi voices characters like Bleach;Ganju, Detective Conan;Genta/Takagi, Dorohedoro;Kaiman, Ippo;Aoki Masaru, Naruto;Iruka/Tobi/Obito, One Piece;Bellamy/VanderdeckenIX, Ryuji in dub is voiced by Kirk Thornton (Roshi from DB Super, Kisame(Sharkboy/daywalker) [I remembered there would be more roles you would recognize, but didn't see them?] Onizuka is 22 (or 23) currently, he was just imagining what it would be like to be 40-yo teacher and have 16-yo student girlfriend like the other guy said...
