Well as we can see all this other stuff wasn't working. Everything else that Onizuka has ever excelled at has been the result of pain and hard work. Whether that was being the Captain of the Karate team or the leader of a biker gang. A system of studying based upon pain really is the best way for him to learn when you think about it.
