The story of Atli and Thorgrim is incredibly tragic when you think about it. The two had been side by side their whole lives, so close they went into the same profession. That sort of a bond between siblings is rare. All of a sudden that person you knew is gone. Not gradually over a period of time because of senility, Alzheimer's, or dementia, just one day poof, gone. It's hard enough today when we understand the medical science behind it. Imagine how devastating that would've been to see happen about a thousand years ago.
