There's a lot to read into Thorfinn's dream, especially the ending. Thorfinn wants revenge because Askeladd killed his father, but how many fathers has Thorfinn now killed just like he did? What's more, if he can't forgive Askeladd then how is Thorfinn ever going to be forgiven for what he's done? If he can't move on then it truly just becomes an endless cycle of revenge and pain.

The norse believed Ragnarok was fairly close. Europe had generally gotten the idea that the world was over stuck in their heads.

Harald Godwinson was the last Saxon King in 1066, he defeated Harald Hardrada King of Norway at the Battle of Stamford Bridge. Before being defeated by William the Conqueror, a.k.a. William the Bastard, the Duke of Normandy. Who was descended from Rollo the first Duke of Normandy. Also known as Hrolf the Walker a Viking chieftain who was made Duke of Normandy in exchange for protecting France against further Viking raids and converting to Christianity. The Normans (which comes from Normanni the French word for the Vikings) eventually conquered all of England. Within a couple of generations there were no Saxon lords left, the only Saxons left in England were peasants.
