As someone else said, Smiley is based on an axolotl, which was never stated in the anime but was stated in the manga. Axolotls are known for their smiles hence Smiley and in the real world are a critically endangered species. And Axolotls require brackish waters (mix of salt and freshwater. So, given the correct solution if some one eats an axolotl DF and falls underwater they won't drown. They may starve to death or get eaten because they can't move but they won't drown. So, shinokuni was the death of Smiley. And after the death of Smiley the apple turned into what looked like a DF. Hmm.🤔

Yeah it is. Smiley is poison gas that ate Sara Sara no Mi, Model: Axolotl. Sara as in Saramandā (salamander). It's like Lasso from Alabasta (Bazooka that ate Dachshund fruit) or Funkfreed (Spanda's sword that was Elephant)
